| | Wear your damn respirators! < on 2/28/2009 6:55 PM >
| | | I've been fighting a nasty case of Pneumonia for the past week and a half. I go back in yesterday for a follow-up check and had an enlightening discussion with the Doctor. Doctor (explaining causes of Pneumonia) "... and it can also be triggered by breathing in toxins" Me (thinking of the storm drain and three abandonments I've been in this month) I ask how long after exposure symptoms show up Doctor "Oh, you'd know if it was that- it's usually almost instant. Except for Asbestos." Oh, GREAT. Me "Well... actually..." (goes on to explain about photographing abandoned buildings and how I *usually* wear a P100) Doctor "........" "You might want to come in for another X-ray when the Pneumonia clears up to check for permanent damage." We all know Asbestos is nasty, but keep this was an unpleasant reminder. I have no doubt that urbexing unprotected contributed to this. Wear protection, kids! [last edit 2/28/2009 6:56 PM by Quarantine - edited 1 times]

| | | If people got terribly sick soon after minimal exposure to asbestos, it wouldn't have taken decades to find out how dangerous exposure can be.

| | | I'm not saying Asbestos was the only cause (I was sick previously) but after exploring for a few years, mostly without a respirator, kinda makes you think. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

| | | I wonder what will make me seriously ill faster. The fact that I chain smoke most of the time exploring, or the exposure to asbestos and other stuff.
On a more serious note, I have worn a respirator once or twice but I'm lazy. If I notice that there is a significant amount of asbestos where I'm walking I'll throw my shirt over my mouth. It seems to be effective, so far. [last edit 3/1/2009 1:39 AM by TCdrainer - edited 1 times]

| | | Eeek pneumonia is a bitch. I had it twice as a kid. Hard to say whether it was from the buildings. I've been in a bunch of buildings that had absurd amounts of mold and god knows what else, never got sick before. *shrug* Feel better though!

I used to do the same. The problem is you're meant to destroy any clothing that has been contaminated with asbestos. Washing clothes of the men who mined it is apparently how their wives caught it. Hmmm, not a good thing to joke about, but if you ever meet me, ask about our Asbestosis Retirement Village idea that me and few exploring buddies came up with ;) Cheers,

| | | I should've worn my respirator in a couple of places, not because of the asbestos, but because of the rather generous helpings of mold on the walls. I never got sick, but my lungs felt funny after being in one of said places for a couple of hours.

| | | as nonchalant as we all are, your lungs are very sensitive to shit you are breathing in. I have been over in the recausticization department for ten days breathing in lime dust and believe it or not, it has taken it's toll. On my two days off, I have been coughing shit up out of my lungs and wheezing pretty bad. Not only am I breathing in lime dust, but fumes from the slaker are also pretty bad. i'm telling you, kids, when it comes to a permanent lung cookie and long-term damage, why fuck around? Masks are cheap.

| | | I find that if I'm just on the cusp of getting sick with the flu/a cold/whatever, exposing myself to the innards of abandoned buildings pushes me right over the edge when I don't wear a mask. I'll wake up the next morning sick... Not because the building made me that way, it just wasn't what my body needed to get better the night before....if you know what I mean.

Thats not going to stop asbestos. Those fibers will penetrate anything short of a N100 filter. But I shouldn't be talking, because I never wear my respirator.

If webmd means anything, you're within the normal range of pneumonia. http://www.webmd.c...nia-topic-overview Nevertheless, thanks for the reminder. Its worthwhile remembering that landlords of most old buildings don't leave their air filtering systems in place for the benefit of future generations of explorers. For those that still provide air filtering systems for us, the copper wiring is usually removed rendering them inoperable.

I laughed so hard when I read that... I don't wear a respirator either unless I really feel like it. I guess I don't really care that much, given my explorations are kept minimal. But I won't be saying that if the Doc tells me my lungs are full of shit, which they probably are anyways from years of pot smoking.

| | | ^Yeah, in my experience weed is much more damaging to your lungs than even cigs. I quit smoking weed years ago (so many better substances) But I'm in much better shape now smoking a pack a day than I was when I would smoke a few bowls a day and no cigs whatsoever. I always imagine a bowl getting filled with resin is the same that it's doing to your lungs. It has alot more "tar" than Tobacco. But yeah, I've had a 3M mask with p 100's for a while now. However, I rarely use it due to most of my explorations being spontanious and spur of the moment. Anyone know how frquently you should replace filters?
