| | Maglite questions. < on 2/22/2009 1:49 AM >
| | | I would like a maglite for exploring, but I also want it small enough to keep in my photo bag. I was thinking of the 2AA mini mag. What maglight would you recommend? Also, is the maglite waterproof? Is it durable, and how long is the warranty and what does it cover?

| | | I personally wouldn't recommend a mini mag to most folks unless you plan on just keeping it in the car for an emergency. They don't put out much light. I've got a Dorcy 6watt LED light that I take caving and exploring. It puts out a ton of light (120 lumens) and so far has proved itself to be waterproof. I dropped it while draining about a month ago and it works fine. I got it at target for about $30. It fits in my pocket and in my camera bag. http://www.flashli...luxeon-k2-41-4297/ Edit: Actually I have the newer one with 160 lumens.... [last edit 2/22/2009 2:00 AM by uTjKfcmXN - edited 1 times]

Incandescents will eat your batteries, so go with LED. I suggest avoiding the Mag Lite LED ones as I had not-so-great performance from them. But then I go in drains and want wide spread or intense spots, so perhaps I'm just being picky. Head lamps are great unless you want it to look normal. It's hard to casually use a head lamp. I would strongly suggest a 15-40 dollar (US) LED light, in the 1+ watt range. Look for warranty, brightness or battery life, throw or flood, durability, and adjustable optics. That's the order I prioritize in because I'm more likely to break a light than lose it, and I need ones that will survive draining and headbutting concrete. Repeatedly. And I carry enough lights to fill flood/spot without weird lenses. If you know the Mag Lite brand go with them, but I didn't like their Mini very much, even for above-ground things. I strongly recommend Cree lights, and Petzl's caving headlamps are high quality (and top dollar). Basically think about how much light you want in your pocket. I got a $35 150-lumen mini sun that's done well in drains so far. Do you really want to be visible for five miles when you click your light on, or can you deal with covering the end to dim it? Feel free to think out loud here, we can perhaps suggest things based on what you do.

| | | I want a light for exploring floors of buildings that are dark and moving through dark hallways. I would like moderate spread, not a high intensity spot. I would prefer a hand held light, and I would prefer maglite brand, as its what my local Rona stocks.

| | | I don't like maglites unless it's the really big, heavy duty ones, which aren't very good for UE. I recently got a Coast TekTorches LED Lenser from Lowes for just $15 and its incredibly bright and small. It has lasted me a long time without a battery change so far, and it has survived one drop in a drain. It has a dim red light too. And it comes with a little pouch that connects onto your belt, which is incredibly useful for me. I lose flashlights all the time and I also have a tendency to forget to bring them or end up exploring when I wasn't expecting to be exploring, and the belt pouch has made a huge difference for that. EDIT: Here it is without the pouch: http://www.amazon....ta-20&linkCode=asn I couldn't find it online with the pouch. [last edit 2/22/2009 4:45 AM by DJ Craig - edited 1 times]

| | | I bring a mini-mag, but for the most part just use my Petzl Tekka+ 4 LED lamp. 35 lumens so it's not obscenely bright or anything but it's not bad.

I once visited the Australian distributor for JetBeam, Nitecore, and various other fancy LED lights, when I was in the market for something new and snazzy. This guy also imported Mini Mag, LED and incan models. However, he didn't do so because he was trying to sell them, but so he could demonstrate how much more you could get from other brands for the same kind of money. I'll always have fond memories of Maglites, from my childhood, but the world has moved on, and Mag don't seem to be keeping up.

| | | Maglites are garbage. Who wants a big ass hole in the middle of their beam? Get an Inova X0 at Target or online. It will even warm your hands up in the winter.

I was up in Indiana, and my aluminum-body Cree 3-watt LED light stopped working on me just because I froze the battery...

| | | Ive been partial to a headlamp/flashlight combo depending on the mission... Current favorite is: http://www.surefire.com/U2-Ultra 100% reliable and adjustable light intensity. Runs on cr123 lithium batteries to provide long term power and compact size. Only downside was the price, but well worth it in my book.

| | | I really want http://www.surefire.com/E2DL but I can't afford it right now, and since theres only 2 buildings to UE in this area I don't need it all that much. If there is a LED, should I buy it instead of a incandescent?
