For what you are asking I would recommend either the

http://www.inovalight.com/x.html

or the

http://www.streaml...roduct.aspx?pid=49

Both are reasonably affordable with the beam characteristics you are looking for. Plus the inova can be purchased at target.

I'll always have fond memories of Maglites, from my childhood, but the world has moved on, and Mag don't seem to be keeping up

Very true.

What do you think of the mini mag?

The mini mag is helpful when I scout in the city. For example, you can say, "Oh no! I dropped my something down this hole in the lid of the manhole," And you peak around for a little bit. Its good when you're in tight urban places but just using your headlamp works well too. If you have the pocket room, it's not a bad option for backup, but then again why not just bring an extra set of AAAs. Also works well with photography.

Keep a red filter or film (plastic, not camera film) so you can get the most out of your light without putting out a "hey I'm right here" beacon. LED's are the way to go and better if you bootleg it onto a head harness...

lol, that's hilarious.

Well anyways, I wouldn't have a minimag as my flashlight, it just doesn't put out enough light. I carry one as my backup though, an LED version.

I use a Fenix LD20, its really good, and really small, just as small as a double A minimag. Max output is 180 lumens so I found it to serve me well, I had to dish out like 70 bucks for it though.

The bigger maglites seem to be okay, although they're kinda bulky, I've been considering getting one just for the sake of having one.

I got a rayovac 1 watt 45 lumen LED light. It cost me $30 CDN dollars, and has a nice smooth beam, and is all metal and sealed.

I prefer Fenix lights over Mag any day, they are brighter and smaller for the most part. This is similar to the one I have now, lasts a long time, has fantastic light output, and runs on two AA batteries so you can replace them if you forget to bring extras.

Had the same MO. No one around here asks that type of shit. What backpack...what light....what camera....what shipping company... The first time he appeared I thought he was some company doing research for the urban warrior demographic.

You either need a light bright enough to see your way, or something INCREDIBLY bright for filming.

So, just about anything that lights up works, actually. Minimag LED is where it's at for me, but I find it excessively bright when you want to be discrete.

Very true, it's hard to find a really low low setting in a market that prides itself on being the brightest. My Fenix lights aren't nearly as dim on low as I'd like.

The first two flashlights i bought was a mini mag 2AA and a led mag 3D

I love the 3d because of its power and dependability. I know its not going to snap in half on me. Unfortunately it is rather big and bulky but I love the payoff it provides when you get creative when using it and when I don't need it I can easily shove it down my pants leg out of sight.

The mini mag however that you are asking about is waterproof and built to the same standards as its big brother but otherwise is a pretty crappy flashlight. I only really carry it around for emergencies or when you need to see where your going but don't want to risk being seen by emitting a lot of light.

Yeah I'm sorta with G.O.S.T .. well there are definitely LED's that will out perform the Maglite LED flashlights in the 2-4 C/D cell lights. However I really love the feel and size of a 3D maglite too. But if you are so inclined you can buy some great drop in lEDs and new lenses that can change them to have much more light or be much more efficient.
You can check out: http://www.malkoff...e=index&cPath=1_25

or also www.candlepowerforums.com has some great mod info for mags and many other flashlights.

I will never use anything other than a Maglite. They have always provided me with absolute stellar customer service in the two times I have sent my 6 cell Maglite in for repair due to a bad switch.

I would trust these lights anywhere, and I have literally driven tent stakes with it, used it as a pry, wedge, and done anything else you can think of with these lights and they are indestructible. They throw a fine beam pattern with fresh batteries and when put on flood. You just have to keep the reflector inside clean. The MiniMag isn't that great for other than home use in my opinion and it certainly isnt waterproof, yet its definetly just as indestructible.

I'd personally buy a better light than a m*glight Check out Surefire, Fenix, Novatac, Ra Lights, Nitecore and make sure you grab one with a "low low" as in less than 5 lumen setting. Red filters and beam diffusers are also great for being "discrete" I personally carry a Surefire LX2 and an Ra Clicky tactical and im about to go buy a Zebralight headlamp for UE. Plus lots of these new lights take rechargeables so no need to spend a ton of money on batts

maglites are great, young women think it doesnt count as a weapon on the use of force model and thus can be charged for striking someone with intermediate weapons force when it only called for soft force. and communication.

fuck yeah, use of force model and people not understanding 4D maglite=baton

I don't really care for Maglite. It's too big and hard to carry and there is no way I'm going to sport the pathetic looking and cumbersome belt holster.

You have to be careful with Maglite when you put it down. If you stand up, it can be knocked over easily and if you lay it on the side, it will roll away from you easily.

Minimag *LED* 2AA is awesome.
