| | Question about finding out if the place is really abandoned ??? < on 1/12/2009 3:39 AM >
| | | Hey all, Well since I got into uer'ing a little I start noticing houses that don't have their driveway plowed of snow, houses that have wood up on the windows etc but how do you really know if I place is abandoned? Like on my way to work, I see 3 houses that are about 10 minutes apart that their driveway is not plowed and they never have lights, no trespassing signs up and chains across their little driveway to stop you from driving in? I stopped at the 3 houses one day and got out for a quick look without going into the snow so no footprints are seen and looked and I saw nothing and I didn't know what to do. All 3 hours are right on the side of a major road and the house would only probably be about 15-30 meters back from the road so if you are driving by you can see the house very easily so I don't want to just start walking around incase somebody confronts me etc. What would you people do? Move on? Keep watching it? Test my luck? All 3 places did have people living in there at one point but I never noticed them being empty with no trespassing signs until like 4 weeks ago. I checked Google maps and I do see cars in all the driveways of the all 3 houses so I am not sure what to think. Also, if a house is boarded up, is it ok to rip a board off if possible with just hands? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

| | | First off, my fav excuse in that scenario is, "I'm thinking of buying, and taking a look around... Any idea who the owner is? How are the neighbors, is this a good area for kids to grow up?" Stop laughing, it'll work. The boards thing... wow, that's going to touch off yet another ethical debate that all know and loathe around here. My PERSONAL opinion is no, it's not cool to take the boards off. If it's already open... ok... fine. If not, you just added Break and Enter to your Trespassing charge, and the above excuse no longer flies. That however is only MY personal opinion. Others will vary, and will say so below, I can almost guarantee it.

| | | Yeah I don't like ripping of boards and never done it or anything I just thought I would ask. My main questions was how do you know if it is abandoned or people are maybe just on vacation for 2-3 months.
Saying I want to buy the place might work if I am outside and don't have my camera but if I had my camera, backpack and tripod I don't think that would fly, they would probably think your trying to steal or something.

| | | Why would you bring a camera, tripod, etc. to steal something? You explain it as taking pics to show your wife what it looks like.

I don't think the presence of a camera would suggest that you were stealing anything. Besides, a story doesn't have to be bulletproof, just plausible.

They could be seasonal homes or they could be derelict. Only summer will tell. Although you could put a piece of paper in the door or a piece of duck tape or some other means to determine if the door(s) have been opened since your last visit - ideally many months from now.

If a car is locked, is it okay to smash a window to gain entry? If a garage is closed, is it okay to break the lock and wander inside? You know the answer to the question already. A healthy hobby shouldn't consist of criminal activity but that's only my opininininion. [last edit 1/12/2009 2:10 PM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks guys. I am just a little paranoid about trying out new places. I don't want my ass to get beat while trying just to take some photos or I don't want to get charged or something stupid and say bye bye to my career. I am just trying to find out maybe what you people do. I don't think they are seasonal homes at all. One is a farm and here is a pic. This one is a bit further back.
This is another home I always saw cops at and now it has a new front door and no marks since winters start.
last one is a house with boards all up but one is loose so you can squeeze in if your a bit smaller in body size.

In 7 years taking this shit for serious (4SRS) I've seen one abandoned house (+ MJs ranch if that counts) that was even remotely worth the slightest risk of a criminal charge. I have little to no interesting poking through the discarded remains of some poor shmuck when there are bigger fish to fry elsewhere. You could mack it to the hoes outside the 7-11 or dapper up and throw some game at the classy dames. If there's the same chance you're getting the clap, who you gonna choose? However if 7-11 is yo ballpark, I can offer this. When I was a kid we used to throw rocks on the rooves of the houses of people we didn't like to wake them up late at night and piss them off. Perhaps you can adapt this juvenile technique to suit your strategy... (we might have blown up a letterbox or two, overkill for your needs perhaps?)

That's exactly what I was thinking. The barn/farm/thing may warrant closer inspection, but I wouldn't bother with the houses. Think of your own residence, take out about three quarters of the stuff you own, add a little aging into the mix, and that's about as interesting as exploring a vacant house would usually get.

I think they're a waste of time, clearly some people don't. I don't see them as worth a criminal charge, perhaps OP does. I think the sub-culture on the whole would do well to look further afield than abandoned houses and I'm happy to say it. Did I mention I don't own a tv? There are an increasing number of things the sub-culture could do without, but unfortunately as more people get into it, the more it gets diluted. Also, UER is a website. There's no such thing as "uer'ing", unless posting on here counts. [last edit 1/12/2009 5:52 PM by Brind - edited 1 times]

Former Meth lab! Takes major $$$ to tear out contaminated sheetrock etc and the place might be condemned in the meantime. Look for electric meters, might be missing, might have to log the kwh to look for use.

I agree. I just think there are probably better ways to encourage people to look beyond crummy old abandoned buildings.

| | | A lot of smaller farms like these are becoming abandoned recently, I have seen a few myself. It has become difficult for small farms (especially in cold places with short growing seasons) to survive on their own, and you see more and more mega-farm companies forming. They but land from smaller farms (or lease it) in diverse regions (hundreds of miles apart from each other) and move around. That way if there's a harsh freeze, storm damage, or any of the other things that could devastate a small farms entire years worth of income, the moving farm is not as affected because they only lose a handful of their hundreds of fields. So, basically, it's pretty likely that these homes are either empty, or only used temporarily by the farmers during the growing season. I guess I really didn't help you at all there.
