Hi all!
One of our teammates - girl named Mika, often tells us interesting things about uer.ca forum. So i decided maybe someone here is interested about our trips and objects in post-USSR countries. Today i'll post some pictures from one of our best visited objects. If there will be any interess i'll post more pictures of our trips.

Object called "535".
Its underground communication unit of former USSR government communication network called "ISKRA-II". Network "Iskra-II" was common in whole Ussr so its only one of hundreds or even thousands of similar communication units. We have visited two of them in Latvia and we are planning to visit one at Lithuania next summer. In case of nuclear or biological disease it is possible to hermetically seal this object. It has all what is needed for autonomically living - diesel generators, drinking water pump, complicated ventilation and air filtering room with climate controlling for all bunker.
Overall area of underground building - about 9600 square meters.
So...here comes the pictures!
Photos: KarlisKlotins, Mika

Entrance:

Hall of communication devices. Some remains of hardware.

Freezing devices. Its for keeping constant temperature in bunker.

Part of water supply system.

Air filtering system. Its here for keeping bunker suitable for living in cases of nuclear or biological disease.

Control panel of ventilation.

And little part of ventilation...

Power distribution room.

One of biggest surprises when we visited it at first was that theres still is electricity and we can turn the lights on. This is picture of communication cross where the input communication cables were connected with communication hardware. Cables is stealed of course...

Manual commutator panel. This is place where is sitting operator and manually connecting input calls with destinations.

Its one of WTF things.

One of greatest things at object - two fully saved 200kW diesel generators for autonomic power supplying in cases when external power shuts off.

Warning signs: "Do not turn on", "Attention electricity" and others.

Some kind of oldschool testing device...

And the new one.

And here we are closing the object when leaving. These doors is closing hermetically.

P.S. Sorry for my english...

Nice location, it makes me glad to see its so well preserved and not smashed. Really cool that you could actually turn on the lights, its as if one day everybody left work and the last one out locked the doors and never looked back.
Thanks for sharing and by the way, your english is fine.

Here is some pictures from diesel generator rooms of two non - abandoned underground bomb shelters.
Bomb shelters built under industrial or administrative buildings must have emergency exit. It means that underground tunnel that comes from shelter and ends in specific distance in small concrete box with small door. Its standard input into bomb shelters for trespassers. Sometimes emergency tunnel starts in shelters diesel room. Like in these two cases.
First - Shelter under active factory. Rest area of shelter (about 1000 square meters) is used as storeroom for old workbenches. I have seen pictures of these rooms, our fellows of other UE team been there.
OK, pictures.

Photos: KarlisKlotins, Spam

Emergency tunnel with locked hermetic doors at end.

Oh, if they're closed so we must find another entrance. We found it.

What did we found here? Perfectly saved standard 100kW diesel generator! Next to it we found test register of regular tests. Last test was about 20 years ago but it still stands as it was. It seems it's possible to still make it work.

Power distribution room:

And small room used as store for shelter opening tools. They're here if in time of war building ruins over the shelter and there is no other exit than break thru the ruins...

Heres another interesting story. These little orange boxes is individual first aid kits. It contains pills against radioactive, bacterial weapon efficacy, pills against vomit and little anti-pain syringe. And - pills against phosphor poisons. The last pills is narcotic and was stolen from most shelters about 20 years ago when Latvia leaved USSR and shelters became abandoned. I don't know cost of these pills but in every shelter they were six for every man to use the shelter in case of war or disease. (for example this shelter - 1200 man).

And here is another bomb shelter with similar diesel generator. We wanted to go further thru hermetic doors to shelter rooms but we were shocked when we saw that beyond the doors is storeroom of brand new home technics...

Emergency tunnel:

Generator:

Another view:

Boxes of gas masks. Every box contains 40 kits - gas mask, carbon air filter, special bag for carrying gas mask and special stickers against steaming of gas mask viewing glass. Pictures of gas masks will be other times. ;)

Thanks for sharing and by the way, your english is fine.

Thx. ;)

Today is the last working day in the year and no one of engineers at my work is doing something useful. So do i.
There are some pictures of former educational radars of aviation institute. They're in good condition.

Photos: KarlisKlotins

Tesla aviation radiophare. Similar device i saw working in one Moscow airport. Here it stands forgotten...

Two mobile radar stations. I heard a lot of horror stories about deaths and mutilations to people who accidentally entered working radar beam...

Cabin of one military radar. When i was there second time there was old man who was instructor when university was still working. He told us about military radar seen on next pictures. It can sense plane from 300m to 300km distance. Reflector is turning on high speed, it is about (as i remember) 100 turns per minute. For example airport radar speed is approx 30 - 50 turns per minute. All hardware in cabin is backuped for cases if something stops working.

To see that not all is good in Latvia next i'll post pictures from some bomb shelters in saaaad condition...

Take only pictures. Leave only footprints.

Hi all in the last day of the year!
As i promised here comes the pictures of bomb shelter in bad condition. Let's look what water can do...

Photos: KarlisKlotins

It's our luck that somehow water in shelter is less than it was times ago. Its seen from dirty lines on the walls that level of water in shelter times ago was more than level of knees.

It's the central room of shelter. In case of disease people is sitting here. On the background you can see old gas mask boxes and rusted chairs.

Gas masks GP-5. One of most widespread civil gas masks in USSR. Carbon filter not installed.

And the same gas masks floating in water...

Here comes some "rusty" pictures. For example petrol lamps.

Identical diesel generator as seen in previous pictures.

And the cine projector!

Here comes some pictures of civil guard equipment found in this shelter.
This is chemical exploration kit. It's here if happens chemical war. Kit contains something seen in chemistry at school - little air pump, cloth filters, fillers and other stuff. And few ampules with substances which changes color when reacts with poison gases. When bombing ends few people walks out from shelter and tests air with radiation testers and these kits. Its the best kit we found in this shelter but we will continue searching and i'll post pictures if [when] we'll found this kit in good condition in other shelter.

And these are the ampules which is used to test air for poison gases.

Here comes another interesting thing. I think all we know that gas masks and respirators just clean outer air from dust and dangerous substances. In the picture is seen one quite rare thing - oxygen regenerative filter for closed breathing equipment. It means that man who uses it is not breathing cleaned air but CO2 which man breaths out is getting thru this filter, chemical reaction is going on, C stays in filter and out of filter comes clean O2 - oxygen to breathe. Of course it is not working forever but for about 1,5 hours. The rest of breathing equipment i'll show another time.

Underground automation.
Photos of our last mad trespassing night. This was best trespassing of all, all actions was more coordinated than other times. This place is automation control unit of some important infrastructure and one rooms is used as former civil guard storeroom. Now we get only in two opened doors. But lately i met some lock picker guy and we'll probably visit this place with him. It's just irresistible wish for me to see automation rooms, diesel generator and other techno stuff

Photos: Cucumber

Checking for motion sensors at entrance.

It's clear, going further thru some hermetic doors.

Fellow Spam is studying civil guard posters.

Posters they show how to use individual protection equipment - gas masks, respirators, first aid kits, how to clean cars from radioactive dust, how shelters are built and how to find them in civil guard alarm.

Happy new year!

Thank you so much for sharing! Great locations, much more preserved than the Cold-War remnants left on this side of the Atlantic!
