just one or two questions about draining. What's the point of doing it? And whats so fun about it? might seem like stupid questions but going in a drain doesn't really scream fun for me.

That's a fair question. Drains can be hazardous, unpleasant environments, and many have little in the way of interesting features.

Some people get a thrill from being in yet another place they're not supposed to be. Ultimately, I'm in it for the photography, but I enjoy the historical aspect of older drains, and I appreciate understanding how drainage systems work in general. Draining is possibly at the geekier end of UE.

I don't think there's any secret perspective you're missing - if drains just don't do it for you, you're probably not alone around here

The subvert, isolated, and often solitary nature of being just feet away from the busy topside.

That pretty much nails it for me. Topside explorations are of abandoned structures; an entirely different "feel" (psychology? sociology?) than something built to never really be seen or experienced in the first place.

A further note that if you're working with small drains, they're usually much less interesting; but I've heard skateboards are strongly recommended for sliding along on your stomach. I've always just cramped myself on my knees - but either way.

What's the point of doing it? Well that's as big a question as any, and one to which there of course is not a single definitive answer. What's the point of getting out of bed in the morning? What's the point of getting off the sofa and out from in front of the tv? What's the point of leaving the house? What's the point of exploring anything? Anywhere? The point is whatever you want it to be.

More or less what I planned on saying. It's what you make it; your reasons for doing it are you own. If you figure draining's not your kind of activity and can't see the point in it, then that's fine - but there are plenty who do enjoy exploring drains.

next to a cave, it's the closest thing you'll feel like you're in a tomb, yet still relatively safe. You have to be able to rely on yourself and what you brought with you to continue & to get you back to where you came from. If you're no where near manholes, turning off all the lights, and just 'being' in pure dark is one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced, and gladly take the time to preform this ritual whenever it's possible. Every time I go into a drain, about 10 minutes in, I seriously question myself why I'm walking crouched over in a dark, wet, smelly, water utility tunnel when I could be outside in the sunlight and enjoying the same things everyone else does... And when I answer myself that I enjoy doing this, and I don't have a problem with being different than everyone else, it's quite comforting, and I really really know who I am for the next few hours. Any problems that I'm having topside, be it relationships, school, money, work... those are all gone below. Not that I make them disappear... they're just not there. Biking doesn't do that. Hunting doesn't do that. Abandonments don't do that. Abandonments make me more nervous, as I'm in constant worry that someone will bust me. Not underground. There's no one down there but the few animal inhabitants. It's another world. You're underneath everyone else, and outsider, outside of everything.

I have not really been draining, but i have been caving a lot, for me it was the frill ov going where not many have, bing with mates, seeing stuff that you don't see every day.

Also when your underground, it's dark, i mean real dark, no light, nothing, its real hard to find that above ground.

and it's great to go up ahead and hid in the crevis of the caves, turn your lights off and hum, scaring the sh*t out of the newbies...

Another draining question...

I just wanted to know if it's alright to go draining by yourself. I don't know anyone who would want to go draining with me, and I probably won't explore the drain extensively. So can I go it alone, or is there like some rule that you always need a partner?

You make the rules. If you want to be alone than so be it. Much more fun and safe with a friend. Just leave a note or mail a letter of your location, it sucks not being able to be found when you need to be found.

There are no rules, infact by it's nature urban exploration is primarily concerned with breaking rules. Internally there are merely guidelines, some of which you might choose to adhere to. The one you will most often hear is 'no drains when it rains' but even that is discarded by some given the right drain, an inflatable boat and some drain assisted flow.

'Unexplored' drains are rarely done solo but it certainly does happen, I've done it before. Depending on your region and the construction of the drain solo can be very dangerous or very mild. Siologen Jeeves Westminster III almost died in Edmonton while going solo in a drain called Thunder Road, and he's one of the most experienced drainers in the world. It's your call.

The following is well worth a read, it's considered by many the drainer's bible.

Thanks for the advice, I just wanted to make sure that draining by yourself is OK as I am new to draining. If possible though, I might be able to find someone to go with.

No. It's not OK. Slip and fall, hit your head, whatever befalls you, you are much better with a companion. At least they can laugh at your Converse/Van wearing, 1 light/torch holding, twisted ankle, trying to keep warm until you can self rescue or worse, have EMS haul you out.

Hook up with somebody with experience, you won't regret it, and they will probably show you much more.

I've heard this from quite a few people who are predominately into drains and who started with them. I find it interesting because I got into drains after abandonments...and while I think that some can be interesting, and its somewhat relaxing (I do like the sound of water which is the main reason I think I have a aquarium as the sound of water is very soothing), it will never take on the same appeal is asylums just because its not a feature rich environment.

But for those who aren't curious about these type of environments, you can talk all you want about features, and pretty pictures...they will still look at you funny.

Yeah, and take someone with you when you go, or at least tell someone where you are going.

I reckon that not only is it safer draining with a friend, but it's also a hell of a lot more fun. If your friend is a drainer themselves or has done natural caving, even better.

I find it a little unlikely you can't find anyone to go exploring with, since a lot of people, when I mention draining, will go "yeah, I've heard-about/done that", "I've wanted to do that", or "me and my friends did that a year ago; is that what you call it?". The rest look at me quizzically.

Whatever you decide, at least let someone trustworthy/dependable know where you're going. You certainly won't regret it the one time you do need help.
