Exploring The Ghetto

I found a couple of great industrials areas in a very rough part of town. I know the area well, but was wondering if anyone has tips on navigating tough areas? (times to go, method of getting there etc..)I will stick out like a sore thumb and even getting there will be a challenge because there are huge expanses of row houses and projects around the site. Being that I'm a newbie, any ideas are helpful...well, except for "take your gat"

ghettos are about all I explore. leave the guns, but bring a knife and mase ( a cat doesnt hurt either)

most of the time when in the ghetto the people see you and think your a cop if you look out of place.

dont act like a fool or a dick and you will be just fine.

Make it look like you belong there. This rule applies to all explorations, not just those in the ghetto. People can tell by how you carry yourself, attitude ect. I would advise you to dress down, walk confidently and dont act like you are about to do something illegal. There is a fine line between being careful, and being paranoid. Be careful. Take in your surroundings and dont be stupid.

Personally, I will drive by a site and the surrounding neighborhood about a week before I explore it. By doing this, I know what to expect, where to go and what to avoid. Good luck.

Heh, every time I explore a place, everyone around is a different race than me too.

My advice is don't go alone. If you don't blend into the area, maybe you have friends that would, if you get my drift.

People who might otherwise tend to "mind their own bidnis" tend to think they have the right to get irate & confrontational at a white dude wandering around their hood with a camera.

I encountered this the hard way on the mean, dark streets of Detroit numerous times.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I live in a ghetto neighborhood where as a grad student I stick out like a sore thumb (long story how I got there...). It leads to a lot of good UE opportunities, but I do have to take a lot of crude comments.

Initially it may be easier for you to pretend you are lost when you are scoping out buildings and whatnot (this works well with a car and maps). Or, go to the other end of the spectrum and be confident (aka act like you are supposed to be there). Know your story and use props as necessary to get there. For example, when I am scouting a site sometimes I jog around it with baggy wind pants on to carry my camera. Most people in my neighborhood are so confused by joggers that they don't get beyond that point (or blame gentrification). I hear cyclists work similarly well, but have to move faster.

I'd also recommend pre-dawn explorations on these neighborhoods (at least to get into the buildings). Like an hour or less before sunrise. If there is one thing I know about my neighborhood is that day or night there are always cars driving through it. Drug dealers do not work day hours. The good news is that most of the people who live in these high crime areas are unlikely to call the cops on you in my experience because chances are someone nearby is doing worse than you. ;) Anyway, just my two cents.

Personally, what I would do is just walk right up to some ghetto looking folks and tell them I'm writing a book on the history of the (insert ghetto name here) and would they mind if I took a photo of them for the book.

Most people want the opportunity to "be famous" in a book, magazine whatever. I actually have tried this in hispanic neighborhoods and it has worked. Walking up to people, acting confident and not scared and acting like you're taking photos for something "serious."

After you're done with that, then you have their trust. Then you can ask those same people, "Is there anything weird or interesting around here?" Sometimes those folks will lead you to the "abandoned church" or "hangout spot."

I feel a lot more comfortable in hispanic neighborhoods than I do in black neighborhoods, but that's just me.

People are weird.

My neighborhood on the outskirts of town. It is technically still in Boston, but just barely. Now Cambridge has no ghetto. To give an example of why I consider this neighborhood ghetto, there are numerous abandoned houses within walking radius. Earlier this year someone nearby was shot to death. In the past month or so a kid on a bike got hit in front of my house, I have witnessed at least two drug busts and had my GPS unit stolen. Perhaps it is not Detroit, but it is still scary and dangerous. ;)

Yup. I live on the outskirts of Richmond, Va. Your best bet here is to avoid the locals. If your going to explore in a bad neighborhood, do it between the hours of 5:00am and 1:00pm. All of the dealers, druggies, gang bangers, hookers, etc. are still sleeping then. After 1:00pm, get the hell out of there!

I live in what could be called "the ghetto". Though there's quite a bit of gentrification going on, I still see the police helicopter circling with its spotlight at least once a month, occasionally I hear gun shots, that kind of thing. I've never felt unsafe in my neighborhood, nor did I feel unsafe when my husband and I fed stray dogs in East St Louis on our honeymoon. Maybe it's because any time I've been a "victim" of crime (I've been robbed at gunpoint, my stereo was stolen from my car), it's been in a middle or upper middle class neighborhood and the perpetrator was a white dude. Or, maybe it's because I'm not constantly living in fear of "them" and can act comfortable and confident in the 'hood because I AM comfortable and confident.
