San Francisco's other famous pool

Many people know about the ruins of Sutro Baths in San Francisco but fewer know about Fleishhacker Pool, which was once the largest swimming pool in the US, holding 6 million gallons of sea water and able to accommodate 10,000 swimmers. Built by philanthropist Herbert Fleishhacker in 1924 (who also later founded the SF zoo), it was so large that the lifeguards needed kayaks for patrol and the military used it for drills & exercises. The pool closed in 1971 when it failed to meet health & safety standards and was later filled with rocks & gravel to create the current parking lot for the San Francisco Zoo. The only thing that remains of the pool today is the bathhouse, which is visible at the end of the Great Highway before the road slopes up towards Fort Funston.

The bathhouse itself is divided into 2 wings most likely for men & womens changing areas & showers. The building is almost completely trashed but some remnants of the lockers, showers and other facilities are still intact. There is also a central area w/ shelving probably used to distribute towels. This area may have been used as an office for city planning at one point because I found several blueprint for civil engineering projects, MUNI, street widening, etc. lying around. The central area also has a second floor with 2 large rooms. The basement is also accessible where the pumps and other equipment for the pool can be seen.

Though it is abandoned and not in use by conventional society, during my explorations there I found evidence of 2 groups of people inhabiting it. On the northwest corner of the ground floor I found practically an apartment setup with a roped off area and lockers moved to create walls. There was a note against thieves & vandals, who the author “Coyote” referred to as tweakers & dopers. On the second floor, I saw an entire rudimentary bike workshop set up, and hundreds of discarded bike frames, forks, wheels, and other random bike parts all piled up. When I ran into Coyote himself during a later visit, who had since moved out, but was returning to feed the cat of another resident, Twilight, who had recently died, he informed me the upstairs stolen bike shop was run by tweakers and lamented the fact that since Twilight had died and he’d moved out, they would probably run rampant on the place now.

As mentioned earlier, the building is almost completely trashed. There is trash piled literally almost to the ceiling in one room. There is not much smell however it seems like mostly old clothes books papers etc. as if people moved there when becoming homeless brought all their stuff before discarding it as their situation worsened even more. It is very fun to explore however and there is some interesting and unique graffiti as well as the machinery and bath facilities. The bike shop and living quarters of Twilight & Coyote really opened my eyes to another side of society often forgotten & ignored.

Twilights (?) room is kind of a trip...

The first time I went in there I did see Coyote snoozing away, hehe, in the nw corner, ground floor. That was 01-28-06... And I've been yelping it up ever since, but since there's no pictures, it didn't really happen. hah.

Nice pictures by the way.

That pool sounds like it must've been lovely. (Weird trying to flash back to a time when people were amazed by large bathhouses. I can't think of a modern-day comparison?) Thanks for sharing something new, I'll have to make my way over there next time I find myself in the area.

aaronsf took me out here the other day.

it was an experience...the place [as stated] it trashed. the most ransacked site i've ever been to. i think the scariest thing was seeing 3-4 hypodermic needles in one of the rooms. i was watching very carefully where i was stepping after that.

coyote's room was really interesting. he has some many curious items and notes around his room. it was probably my favorite part of the trip. all things considered, his "room" was fairly nice.

a few photos......

I like them all, but that first one of the lockers is spectacular, from that weird green, to the crackled pattern, to the way they seem to appear out of a black fog, it all just works.

thanks rustyjaw! i took 10 or so shots of those lockers, and eventually got this shot. this was one of the more interesting sets of lockers because of the lock still on one of them, and they all still had doors.

EDIT: added last sentence.

Did you by chance see anything remotely resembling something satanic? I recall a friend telling me about how him and one of my other friends met a guy named twilight who brought them back there. They left after they said they saw some weird satanic altar thing. Strange that they had to unlock the door on the way out...

I recently went there as my first UE. This was the most satanic thing I saw. On the left is a pentagram which did not make it into the picture

I got some other (much better) pictures of the place as well, but there is nothing the other two posters have not done already.
