Comme vous l'avez peut-être entendu, on parle beaucoup de la résurection du Cinéma V ces derniers temps. Construit en 1927, il s'appelait alors l'Empress Theater, on le reconnaît facilement par son style "Égyptien" gracieuseté d'Alcide Chaussé (Architecte) et d'Emmanuel Briffa (designer). L'Empress à changé de vocation à quelque reprise, devenant un cabaret nommé Royal Follies en 1962, puis il fût partiellement transformé en cinéma en 1968 (Cinema V et Salle Hermes). En 1974 il est renommé The Home of Blue Movies jusqu'à ce que Famous Players l'achète en 1988. Finalement, suite à un incendie en 1992 la place est condamnée et acheté par la ville de Montréal en 1999.

Depuis 1994 des groupes de citoyens ont tenté de faire transformer la bâtisse abandonnée en centre culturel, après plusieurs échecs cette fois-ci sera-t-elle la bonne? Début févier la ville de Montréal a émis un communiqué confirmant qu'elle donnait son accord au projet de revitalisation du centre culturel Empress. Avec des partenaires aussi sérieux que le McGill Conservatory et le Black Theatre Workshop tout laisse croire que le projet sera complété en 2010, SI Québec s'engage à verser le reste du financement.
Si ce n'est pas déjà fait, allez y jetter un coup d'oeil avant les débuts des travaux (si travaux il y aura...)

It's a shame that many classical theatres in Montreal are often unkempt and disgarded as the years go on. It really is a crime that such architecturally sound buildings are left to rot...
