Discovered this empty 25-unit apartment building in the heart of Montreal. Purchased by McGill University in 1969 for $335,000, this gorgeous building was constructed in 1941, and remains largely unchanged today.

The building was vacated by all tenants in mid-to-late 2007, as the University intends to convert or demolish the building for academic use.

An old photo of the building pulled from the web (sorry, could find only thumbnails)

No, the building is not boring at all - I'm sorry if the story I'm telling through my images is boring, perhaps I focus too much on architectural detail. The building is very interesting, with 25 apartments all accessible, a parking garage, a large mechanical room...

Does anyone else think my images are boring? I can take this as constructive criticism to post more exciting stuff....

Thanks controleman, especially coming from you (your images are sublime). No, I am not a professional, just a very enthusiastic amateur, I learn something new every day.

@rooty: no no I was not talking about your photos or the way you work (again as we often mention, this is not a photography critique forum), I was talking about place itself, it's.... well, an empty apartment building wich is to me, a bit boring.

@sebastian: ah, thanks for the clarification - my pride remains partially intact! =)

I screwed up again - I should have tried harder to "sell" this one. The building is empty of tenants - but full of character. There are signs of life everywhere, recent and not so recent. The sensation is very strange as you walk through this building, because it is in such good condition for its age, yet there is no one there? And if you Google the address, you can even find a small forum of former residents, who clearly were attached to their home. For me, this added context makes me feel as if I am walking through a site full of life - the atmosphere is tangible, almost as if I used to live there.

Over 25 apartments, I hope there should be few interesting ones.

Pretty nice place, you should have bring us some outside shots. Thanks for the inside still !

BTW, I doubt they can and want to demolish this building. Maybe they want to upgrade it, but this building is most certainly protected.

Thanks, cjb: I am a photo freak - I have many more photos of the building, and standard def videos as well. I have attached some exteriors for you.

Actually, one of the former tenants looked into it and to my surprise too, apparently the building is not protected. Someone would have to apply for the protection, and I doubt McGill will bother. They have knocked down historic buildings in the past, for example, the Donner building on the north part of campus (now replaced by the Genome bldg). But that was because they needed modern and cross-disciplinary labs.

Love those architectural details. I would live there in a minute. Thanks for sharing.

It's great to be alive!
