There are some buildings I just can't find a way into. I was wondering how I would find who owns it/caretaker/contact info for a tour.

You can file a waiver request with me. The form you'd need to fill out (in triplicate) is available in to downloads section. There is a $20 filing fee which you could make via PayPal when you submit your application. If you want rush processing, you'll need to include the $10 rush processing fee. To be honest, you should strongly consider the rushed processing fee, because otherwise your request will take quite a while to process, as I'm pretty busy processing the 4658-85.2 waiver request application for the group that wants to get into the massive old Spacely Space Sprockets factory.

If you have further questions regarding this, ask here, or PM me. We've really worked hard over the past couple months to simplify the 4658-85.2 rules & waiver process, but if you weren't at all familiar with 4658-85.2, then the Education Department here isn't doing their damn job (which makes my job more difficult)!

Oh Canada I know where that is.

Canada is a pretty big country. It helps people to help you if they know what region or city.

Hey, what about waiver request application 4657-84.2.3.4? Is that still in effect? I just got used to it being implemented to replace waiver request application 4565-72.3.4BS which replaced 4434-31.2.1TC!

Damn! All these damned changes are causing my brain to explode!

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

Seriously, as posted by u26580, check with the town hall in their property records.

Contact the owner and ask politely. If they say 'no', then it means 'no'.
Another idea is to watch to see if someone is at the building. Ask them. They may just allow you in and give you a tour.

Marko,

I did receive your payment, and am processing your application. Just kidding...

I usually try to ask permission, so I can lazily poke around a site instead of a stressful sneak & peak. I have a pretty good success rate, and based on that, here are some quick suggestions:

1. Research the history of the place in advance, so when you ask permission, you can demonstrate that you have a serious interest, & it's not just some impulsive thing.
2. Don't look/smell like you just got out of jail an hour before, or like your next stop is going to be at the weekly Anarchists United protest.
3. Be a salesman -- you're selling yourself here. Know how to social engineer, and while not being annoying about it, try not to accept "no" as an answer. Have valid responses ready to alleviate the understandable concern of "Sorry, it's too dangerous in there," or "That doesn't make sense -- why would any reasonable person want to go poke around a nasty, dirty, dangerous, empty old building?!"
4. One of my favorite psychological ploys is "My _____ (uncle, grandfather, etc. depending on the history of the place) used to work there long ago & had told me some stories about what it was like. He died last year, and I dunno, as silly as it might sound, I'd just like to take a quick look inside this building that he once worked in!"

To get property owner info, as other people have suggested, the tax assessor's office & other city/county agencies could work. If there's any concern of the site being contaminated, local/state/federal EPA might have info, including ownership, available on-line.

One technique I use for distant sites is to use software like Street Atlas USA Deluxe to locate the property, and then locate the names & phone #s of businesses or residences located immediately around it. I'll then cold-call the businesses or residences, give a brief explanation of my interest in the site & let them know that I'm hundreds of miles away & am doing some advance research prior to a visit, and ask if they have a spare moment to talk to me about what they know of the place. This has paid-off big-time, as on several occasions, I've ended up talking to people who actually owned the site, or had a key to the gate because they watched the site for the owners, who didn't live nearby.

In this day & age with all the crime, lawsuits, & hassles of daily existence in our warped society, someone that owns some big old factory or whatever has every reason to NOT want to risk allowing some stranger to venture into the site. It's real easy for all of us to think that we'd never sue someone if we got hurt in their building, but if you fall through a floor & are permanently paralyzed, have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills currently, plus will need someone to feed you & change your diapers for the rest of your life, you're absolutely going to end up throwing out the personal responsibility stoicism and SUE SUE SUE.
