Bureaucratic Scouting

Has anyone tried using City/County tax or land management offices to get some advance intel on just how abandoned an abandoned building is? All that information is typically public domain, and it seems like it could possibly be helpful in some cases.

My only thought is if they keep records of who looked at what, and you get caught on premises, they might be able to stiffen any penalties since they could prove it was obviously premeditated.

Anybody tried it at all, or do you think it would be to much extra work?

'Minimal collateral damage' and 'Entire star system' do not belong in the same sentence.

I went to the city once and got all the historical and to be demolished sites once.

It was while I was doing research for the owner of the Canada Blue Tannery.

It didn't pan out to anything though.

I don't believe record keepers have the right to relay information regarding what you looked at to the police unless you've comitted a crime and that information is used as evidence. In fact I believe this was one of the arguing points over the Patriot Act.

It's no big deal. For all they know, you could be a land speculator looking for defunct property. It's tough to determine abandonment for accessor's records. The good thing with tax records is the owner is public record, so if you see a site you like, then you got a contact.

I get on construction bidding websites and keyword in "demolition". It'll list jobs going out for bid that may be of interest to demolition contractors.

You can also check local public hearing notices on rezoning and new development. They get really detailed on land use changes, including existing structures. You'd be surprised how much info they have. Building square footage, construction methods, year built, building use, etc.

I got a public hearing letter for a development near my residence and it described in detail every house and structure scheduled to be demolished.

In my research I've found two things. I don't know how often this happens or if it's standard procedure but, when a building is demolished the city/county records department will throw out the blueprints to said building, and the only record after that is the permit for demolition.

use the internet to find your cities historical or most endangered buildings list. This really works.

I got about 20 places to see once it gets warmer.

I'll be heading to a town hall first thing tomorrow morning to see if I can get blueprints to a local abandoned state hospital that just had two buildings taken down... I'd love to have the blueprints!! Thanks for the info.
