The Story Behind the Picture

Last fall I had the opportunity to explore an abandoned farmhouse near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. It was a place we had scouted out before, though this time a chance encounter with some neighbors led us to get permission to go inside.

While talking to the neighbors, we found out that the house had been empty since 2002, when the elderly old woman that lived there had passed away. I hadn’t given the location any thought since then until I received this email today:

Hi there
I saw your photos of the abandoned house in Little Sandusky, Ohio on abandonedbutnotforgotten.com. Great pictures, and I wondered if you knew anything about who lived there?

The only reason I ask is because one of your photos within the house showed photographs of two boys, along with handwriting saying 'Derek Falk graduation 2002'. Out of curiosity I googled the name, and a boy of the same name died aged 21 at one of Ohio's universities a few years ago. He started college in 2002 which would be in keeping with graduating high school the same year.

It could of course be complete coincidence but an interesting coincidence if so.

Your photographs are of very high quality, long may your work continue.

Best wishes

B Walsh

This is the picture in question: http://www.ohiourb...php?g2_itemId=9362

At the time, it was just another picture. I like to photograph keepsakes that get left behind, as they make me think about the lives and stories behind them that I’d probably never know or understand. This is what I found via google:

Coroner rules 'alcohol withdrawal': Syndrome caused ONU student’s death.
Byline: David Trinko

Feb. 9--ADA -- "Alcohol withdrawal syndrome" caused the Sept. 6 death of a 21-year-old Ohio Northern University student, according to Hardin County's coroner. Hardin County Coroner Dr. Lawrence Kuk met with the Montgomery County Coroner's Office and other medical consultants Wednesday before issuing the ruling on the death of Derek C. Falk, a 21-year-old senior business major from Harpster in Wyandot County.

"We all came down to the same reaction," said David Crosson, the livein adviser for Delta Sigma Phi, of which Falk was a member. "We're only happy there's closure now." Ada Police Department officers discovered Falk's body when it responded to an off-campus residence at 325 E. Monford St., Ada, on a call about an unresponsive male. Falk's father, Barry Falk, said in September his son apparently had several friends over for a get-together Sept. 5 before the classes began the next day. Barry Falk didn't return a call Wednesday afternoon. Kuk also didn't return telephone calls Wednesday. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a set of symptoms occurring when someone stops drinking after long-term use, according to a 2004 article in American Family Physician. Bad cases of it can result in "delirium tremors," a serious clouding of consciousness that rarely causes death, to between 1 percent and 5 percent of its sufferers, according to American Family Physician.

Derek Falk, a 2002 Upper Sandusky graduate, was a basketball player during his high school days. He was a first-team all-Northern Ohio League selection during his senior year, averaging 14.5 points per game and five rebounds per game on his way to a third-team all-Northwest Ohio selection. He served as a rush chairman for his fraternity in 2004… "Derek was well-known on campus. He was known not just in his fraternity but throughout campus," Hilderbrand said. "I believe it had a very serious effect on a vast number of students. This difficulty hit home for them."

place looks cool!

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

Wow. That is a sad story.

I always wonder the same thing, too. Now I'm motivated to research... hmm. =)

I would love to find a place like that one day and restore it to live in. That is an absolutely beautiful house. Yes it was/is a sad story but fixing it up would give that place a new lease on life. That structural damage looks significant though.

sad, such a beauty.
