Odd smell
< on 1/5/2008 8:56 AM >

I was peeking into a manhole with my nifty pocket light one night when I noticed a strangely sweet smell coming from the inside of the space. The manhole cover indicated Telephone cables were running down there. The smell caught me off guard, and I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of if the smell is indicative of any dangerous gas. It could very well be nothing to worry about, but any help is appreciated.

If, and as you confirmed, this "sweet smell" it was probably someone smoking a fatty.

If no one was smoking a "fatty" it was probably the sweet smell of your friends fart.

It happens.

Given the time of year... maybe glycol? It has a pretty sweet smell about it. We had a room at my old job that always had a sweet smell and that's where it came from.

Well, it is POSSIBLE that it was a decomposing body. I hear that it is a somewhat sweet smell, not unlike pumpkin pie. Of course, if you know what it is, then you tend to throw up when you smell it.

Bull Shit! I smelled a body a week old. A summer week. Could be smelled a 1/4 mile away. That was how it was found. Ripe Ripe Ripe. Dead dog x10.

Sorry I don't have an answer for your sweet smell. Just did a Hazmat class & no sweet smelling chemicals were discussed.

Waffles. It is a well known fact that telco tunnels or any tunnel with wires in it for that matter smell like waffles and pancake syrup in places. I have no idea why, but they do. Someone once said it was rat poison. That may be, and even I would eat the crap outa that, so a rat would be no match.

A dead body does have a slightly sweet smell to it mixed in with a nasty fecal (from GI tract, large intestine and rectum), vomitus (stomach and intestine contents), and overall decomp smell. Once you smell it, you'll never forget it and you will instantly recognize it again if you ever come across it. I smelled it twice in my life (one was from a suicide victim dead for over 1 week found in a dorm by myself and a friend).

I do know that auto radiator coolant supposedly has a sweet smell, even though I don't think so. I heard that is why animals are attracted to it. Maybe someone tossed their used coolant down the sewar/drain?

I'm going hunting for mysteries. Where's my flashlight?

It tastes sweet too. Try it, just a lick. A jug and you might go blind.

(...) was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of if the smell is indicative of any dangerous gas.

-IIRC from my offshore safety training, the odorants added to odor-free gases all smell of something rotten - basically since this smell is less likely to be confused with anything else.

Two qualified guesses as to what you smelled:

a) Rat poison - cable insulation is to rodents what beer is to us - whenever you get hold of some, you consume it. Therefore, the rat poison used in such places is rather smelly, to attract rodents to this instead of the insulation.

b) The lubricant used when pulling cables through ducts often (At least here in Europe; probably same thing in the US) smells rather sweet.

Just a wild guess here, but I am around electrical and data cables alot and the plastic insulation on new wires off-gasses a weird odor. It's not nauseous or stinky, but not sure if I would call it sweet.

Other thing to note, mice and rat turds in great quantities have a kind of sweet pungent smell. Kinda weird, but true.

People decomposing afer being embalmed in a open mass grave on an island is one of the most disturbing smells I have ever dealt with, though there is a chlorine plant in Newark NJ that used to make mothballs, and the earth and holding pens of that place are gag worthy... probably not helpful to your cause, but dead people stink.

Don't know anything about this topic but did a quick google search and came up with this:

"Ethene: Or Ethylene simplest member of class of aliphatic organic compounds called alkenes, which contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond. Ethylene is a colourless, slightly sweet-smelling gas of formula H2C=CH2. It is slightly soluble in water and is produced in commercial amounts by cracking and fractional distillation of petroleum and from natural gas."

I could be completely wrong, probably am, but I would stay away from anything that smelled funny.

heres the website I got it from
