| | Key Systems Building < on 12/31/2007 9:18 PM >
| | | Saturday night adventures in downtown Oakland, CA.
#1 Errant streetlight and a Krypton flashlight from below the stairs light this one. #2 Exterior shot from inside the 7th floor. Heavy fog that night. #3 Street level lobby. Errant street light only. #4 Exterior facade detail. DOI Key Systems Building in downtown Oakland, a Designated National Landmark. The seven-story Beaux Arts building was built in 1911 by Frederick H. Meyer and Walter D. Reed originally as the Security Bank Building and then later as the Bank of Italy and the Key System Building. The City of Oakland’s Cultural Heritage Survey has identified the building as an anchor and primary contributor to the “Downtown Historic District”, an Area of Primary Importance (API). The building is a Designated Historic Property (DHP) and City Landmark with a rating of A1+. In addition, the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently abandoned and extremely boarded up.

| | | 1 and 2 are the real power shots in my opinion as well. For a building this size, there was relatively little of interest photographically. The inside is just a bare concrete skeleton on all floors but the lobby. The only thing to shoot that looked like it dated from the beginning of the building was the staircase and columns in the lobby. We were actually quite disappointed with the place because we were expecting much more on the interior. The exterior is where the greatness is in this place. Shooting the outside of a building, from the inside, leaves little options for angles though! I figured I had to include some of the stonework detail on the outside and ended focusing many of my pics on this. I'm still processing the others, but they are only good and not great for me. Thanks for the feedback. I found these pics peaceful as well, Martino. Don't know why though...

| | | Here's a couple more from this trip.
7th floor looking through the window with newer buildings in the background on 11th st.
This is one of my favorite shots I've taken. There isn't much underground stuff in California cities, that I know of, so this was a rare find for me. Pulled a manhole cover for this one. Below street level in Oakland, CA, light rains in from above and puddles on the floor in this 8 minute 40 sec exposure at F4.0 and ISO400. This ranks as one of the riskiest photographic expeditions I've been on. After being in heavy darkness for over 30 minutes, my eyes had adjusted significantly and I could see the light just like here in the picture. It really surprises me that it took 8 minutes for my camera to pick it up. It just emphasizes the incredible capacity of the human eye.

In fact, there wasn't even a light switch there. An artifact of construction? Construction workers joke? Don't know.

That entrance is SO shady! I think my nearby neighbor owns or at least has some strong affiliation with that building so I didn't trip too hard, but still, sketchy. He might just be a realtor, I'd probably still get fucked. Whatever. Your basement ladder long exposure is really stellar.
