| | | Ames - home of the world's largest wind tunnel! (Unless you count the Russians one that no one has ever seen and is most likely a lie).... Okay, I'm gonna be heading out this weekend to go take pictures.....what does everyone want pics of? I wish I had taken pics when the place was closed, but now parts of it like the control room for the 80x120 wind tunnel are mostly completed...well, kind of. There is a sweet room I have yet to get into where it's completely sound absorbing...so you can hear your heart beat, etc....of course I have tinnitus so I'd just hear "weeeeeee" but it would be sweet to talk and not even hear yourself. Anyway - are there any buffs out there that want a pic of this and that, otherwise I'm going to just shoot whatever I see - and yes this is going to be a legal trip.... L

Shoot everything! This is a place 99.9% of us will never get to go. So personally I want to see as much as possible.
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

Is this the place that was on Modern Marvels?
40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware. |

I believe it was. I saw a little of it. I might be wrong. I might be thinking of the program "Worlds biggest machines"... I just googled it and I guess they were the same show. Apparently I have strep throat so I'm waiting till I feel a little better - also wondering when is going to be best, night or day, probably will go twice. Problem is the person I go with works there so he is like, not too excited to go LOL!!! I gotta drag him there. I have been in the tunnel at night and it is SO dark you can't see anything. I have not been in it during the day. Of course the lights weren't on. I wonder if the light shows through the fans during the day; I'll have to ask. I will take tons of pictures but none of them will be as cool as yours (I'm not a photographer). L [last edit 12/22/2007 4:26 PM by Sand - edited 1 times]

| | | Okay. First off, I apologize for the crappy pics. It was a little rushed and hurried to say the least. I couldn't use flash in a variety of settings so as to not draw attention to myself....or even really STOP to walk in some parts. Again, I apologize. On to the craptastic pics - this was at night, so no building shots (well, no good ones) and not a lot of time at all. The exif data is all off too. The more interesting stuff will be when I go in the daytime.
I don't know what it is...
Fun!
One of the control rooms to a wind tunnel.
I kinda ended up liking this picture.
Entrance to 40x80 control room...
40x80 control room with lotsa chairs....
More control room.
They sure like red. And I don't know why they would evacuate LOL. I guess if something went wrong with the tunnel.
I guess a workshop area with the eyewash, again.
Inside the 40x80 wind tunnel.
You can see how far away the door is...this place is pretty big.
80x120 control room.
Just more of the room.
I like the tunnel temp monitor :D
The room underneath the wind tunnel....the balance house.
Another door to it.
More pictures including the inside of the 80x120 on the photobucket L [last edit 12/24/2007 10:18 AM by Sand - edited 4 times]

| | | It was brought to my attention that photobucket allows editing on guest/password albums (STUPID, IMO) so I have had to make it public. http://s206.photob...ms/bb110/sandaili/ Go to "trip 1" on the side there. Also please cut me some slack, I tried turning the images and even SAVED them (the sideways ones in the gallery) and it still didn't save it right. I both love and hate linux at the same time. I also have a fever of 102 and can't eat, but I still wanted to go L [last edit 12/24/2007 7:55 PM by Sand - edited 2 times]

| | | Well I guess there is not much interest, I don't think I'm gonna head back for outside shots as I kinda am putting the person who is taking me on the line to do so. Thought it was cool, though. LOL... Or I guess I will but I'm not gonna hurry to do so. *shrugs* looking forward to the meetup! L
