Sportsmansguide.com as well as almost any other online military surplus seller usually carries old gas masks for cheap.

Also, whatever you do, make sure you get one that makes you look totally bad-ass in photos. That seems to be the only reason why most people here wear them.

some people might say it makes them look like a genuine nerd but maybe the other nerds will think that looks totally bad ass!

now the gas mask on the other hand, thats different, that looks post apocalyptic or something all WWI retro and ready for a phosgene attack!

So my question is this:

True a Gas Mask is more badass, but try to aim with a DSLR camera ;)

I know this might sound stupid and not the safest idea, but has anyone tried modding a gas mask so that it could have a P100 filter put in it?

Then you could look extra bad-ass and still be protected from the fibre nasties.

I have a mask like the one Pezking pictured on page 1.

Does anyone else get lightheaded when using this type of mask? I don't know if I breathe heavier when I have it on and get too much oxygen or what the deal is.

Here's a question; I'm a guy who can't be bothered to shave that frequently. When I was in the Reserves I was told that more than a days worth of stubble will stop a gas mask from sticking to your face properly, making it (style aside) pointless wearing one. Does that apply to all respirators? I'd feel more comfortable on some trips if I had one, but only if it's more than just a neat looking placebo.

if there's no air circulation between the mask rubber and your skin you are ok.
Cover the filters with your hands and try to breathe. If you can't your mask is secure.

Gas mask should protect more than respirator no?

No, Gas Masks don't work against asbestos and the like. Lots of older gas masks actually have asbestos in the filter.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that gas masks work on a chemical reaction based system that stops dangerous gases from getting through, but they still allow particles the size of asbestos fibres through.

Actually, both gasmask and respirator are just the same thing, they both use a filter you can switch if needed. While there were a few gasmasks made with a filter inside them they are now unusable due lack of replacement filters. In all other cases you just use the gasmask/respirator with the appropriote filter. Filters have color and letter/number codes to specify what they protect you agianst, while there are specialized filters it's not uncommon that they make combinationfilters. for instance, it's possible to get a P100 combined with, let's say, organic vapours. There are many combinations available.

Well, now I know! Thanks. I'm definitely going to have to find one that has P100 filters available for it. I need to look more badass when I'm sneaking around in the dark.

When they say a mask is NBC, is it the mask (rubber) or the filter?

I use this kind. Protects against mold, asbestos, pesticides, dust.. just about anything. Don't have to use it too often though.

I have that same unit, which I purchased recently to replace an older one made by 3M which just worn out. It (the one in the image made by AO Safety) works great, and is surprisingly comfortable. The replacement filters are also easily available at about $20.00 per pair. As far as having mold and/or asbestos in my lungs, it's not a good thing, even having a one time encounter may present problems years later. Why even take the chance. Here's the math: respirator= cheap, lung cancer= expensive.

You obviously don't live somewhere with free health care!

In Canada your equation doesn't work. We use different math I guess ;)

Free health care or not... I don't want to have to order new lung from china over ebay ;)

Regarding Sirber,

If we order a respirator mask, new lung, or whatever the product from China is, it's probably going to be painted with lead paint and stuffed in its packaging box wrapped in asbestos for cushioning. What do you expect from a commie state. If we order a new lung (man made) from China, it will probably take a year to get here on a slow boat, and any rubber or plastic that's in it will be all dried out. But still, I'd rather buy the mask I have (made in the USA) and prevent a hospital visit later in life. I agree with you in having a respirator instead of a hospital bed.
