I know the standard seems to be PS, but I wondered if there are any other programs that are more efficient and allow editing of whole batches?

I just use Photoshop, I've been trying to get used to Aperture, but I always end up going back to Photoshop.

I heard you can do batch editing in Lightroom pretty easily.

Have a look a Ulead's PhotoImpact (created by the same folks who made the original PhotoStyler - later marketed by Aldus and then absorbed by Adobe).

You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials.

I tried using The GIMP for a while but eventually went back to Photoshop for a few features I find useful but GIMP lacks. You can definitely do a lot of sophisticated batch operations in Photoshop, I don't imagine you will find anything superior.

Really, the best possible photo editing system for any serious photographer has to be Adobe Photoshop CS3 coupled with Lightroom (Bridge is on the way out...no doubt). This gives you many batch processing option as well as unrivaled photo-editing/manipulation capabilities. There really aren't any programs out there that compare. The downside being the price, though you can get some decent student discounts if you are a student, or know one.

As someone who despises monopolies, it pains me that Adobe pretty much has this market cornered. As a working professional though, the lack of compatability issues that would likely stem from several similar programs is a godsend.

I wish I could give advice on some of the lower end/free programs as far as your question is concerned; but I really have no experience with them.

-CorelDraw... Its easy to use but doesn't do as much.
-PaintShop Pro... its very simular to Photoshop.
