I was there in the summer, 2nd trip. I don't remember seeing an elephants ass but if it's there, I probably have a picture of it. I took over two hundred in there.

Carlsbad is freakin amazing

It is!!! I was fortunate enough to be there when the mexican fruit bats were in the cave (before they migrate south)....holy crap! theres close to a million of these things and when they fly out of the cave at dusk it is a sight to behold. When they fly out of the mouth of the cave they have to fly in circles to gain vertical lift...well for like 20-30min it was a black tornado of bats emerging from the cave...then there was the ribbon of bats flying into the distance....it was freakin sick!!!! Austin aint got nothing on this! Its a total must see!!!

On that same trip I managed to weasel my way into a back country cave tour... $10, 6 people and 2 park rangers, 4+ hrs....You sign a paper saying you wont tell/ show anyone where the cave is....they drive you into the desert in park ranger trucks...then you hike for a while. At the bottom of this gully, the rangers had to unlock this stainless steel grate so you could drop into the cave. There were no lights, only the headlamps on your helmet... the entrance to the cave was belly crawling on large painful gravel for like 30+ yards...it was TIGHT!!! You had to have your head turned to the side b/c you couldnt fit if your head was up and facing forward. I could go on for a while... lets just say that the interior was truly amazing...one of the rangers said that this was the his fav cave in the park. All this for $10!!!! You got 2 park rangers all to yourself for 4+ hrs for $10!! those dude know so much.

***sorry for the tangent -I had kinda forgot about that trip till now ***

Now that sounds cool! Caves are awesome, I think Carlsbad is the king. There is one outside of Austin that is called interspace or something like that, they found it while taking soil samples for I-35. Its pretty cool (not like Carlsbad), and worth the 12 bucks (i think).

I got to see the bats as well and it is truly a sight to behold! Austin's are pretty cool to see but there is an old railroad tunnel outside of Fredricksburg that I thought was almost as cool as carlsbad's bats.

I think the elephant ass was just outside the great room but I am not sure, its been a few years and a lotta beers ago.
