First roll of film

I normally shoot with a Canon 300D but a friend had recently convinced me to purchase a film body and experiment a bit. I got a hold of a Canon Elan 7E and purchased some Fujifilm 200 speed film and headed south west with a friend.

I'm still on the fence if I like the look of it all or not, I still have 3 rolls on the shelf ready to be developed.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

I like number 4. The first one seems a bit muddy, and the rest after 4 are a bit dark.

It's a sales ticket booth for a closed stadium.

Aye, though it was brief and I don't think we ever actually were formerly introduced to one another! I would have liked to stick around longer but my ride was leaving and so was I.

Your first shot is far to red. Were all your shots that hue or just that one? If its not the film check your battery, your metering seems off. If you bought an old camera, an old battery might be giving you screwy/inaccurate readings.

It was just that one shot that's kinda red, the original shadows on all the photos were faded so I adjusted the curves to darken the shadows. That's all I did in post processing. I had to buy batteries when I got the camera so I doubt that's the issue.

Do I even need to say I love Detroit??

The last couple shots are too dark, but you are doing a good job for someone who has just started shooting film. I demand to see more.

I would get an external light meter (mine was $30 on eBay) to get better exposures (some of that you showed were underexposed). But they are great first steps with film! Shoot more!

Aside from exposure, these seem to be suffering from poor scans. Are these grocery store scans, or flatbeds of prints? Or just not-too-great neg scans? If there's details in the shadows that you pull out in post, try getting that detail in the scan instead, it will give you much cleaner results with the final product.

It's nice that your wide angle is now actually wide (1.6x doesn't seem like much until you go 1x), but be careful with pointing the lens up too much - the converging lines get over-emphasized with wide angle, and a few of these have that falling over backwards look. Try moving the tripod to keep the lens as parallel to the ground as possible, it will work wonders.

Don't worry about getting an external meter, just learn to work with yours - generally, try overexposing by 1 stop with print and slide film, and figure out from there how you tend to meter each scene (are you reading the overall scene, or taking meter readings from dark areas, light areas, both and split the difference, etc). Increase your shutter time with longer exposures too (10 seconds+), you're going to have to deal with reciprocity failure with film.

As for the first pic, that's my favourite of the bunch. Don't worry about the slightly red tone, it's a bit of underexposure, but it's also because there's no white balance with film - bright sunlight that's leaking in from behind boards is going to appear warmer in most cases, especially when everything it's reflecting off of is either yellow or red. It's just the way it is, you're probably just used to your digi 'correcting' it.

My only real advice - shoot a few scenes with both film and digi under different kinds of light, so you can get a sense of what similarities and differences the cameras have. Direct comparison is really the fastest way to learn a new medium, at least if you're really comfortable with anther one already.

yep.

Does the camera have a spot meter on it? If so, you won't need an hand held. You could also just use your digi as a test shot and then dial in those settings into the film body until you're comfortable with it.

In days past, when zoom lenses were first invented, old-fashioned folks (the ones I learned from) used to joke that they used a 'shoe leather zoom,' same theory goes here. Even if the Elan doesn't have a spot meter, you can just walk around metering part of the scene up close with centre-weighted metering. It's not like your subject is going anywhere.

And if you use the digi to meter, keep in mind that the digi rebel is about 2/3 of a stop higher than the iso it claims to use (ie: says iso 100, is actually closer to 160), older Nikons are about half a stop off. The newest dslrs are generally pretty dead-on. Just some food for thought.

yep.

Scanned by my friend on a negative scanner, they're pretty awesome scans besides the faded shadows.

And yes the 12-24mm is a bit crazy wide now. But my choices for EF lenses is limited to the 12-24mm and a 50mm f/1.8

Thanks for the good advice everyone. I have lots of playing around to do with this camera, so far I'm still shooting mostly digital everywhere I go.
