My first trip - Mystery Microwave Tower

Hey all, here are the results of my first ever UE trip. I went to the Mystery Microwave tower just outside Ottawa. Let me know what you think, don't be shy, i know there's room to improve! These were shot in RAW with a Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D DSLR and were put through CS3 for grayscale or saturation adjustments.

Here goes!

1.

The backside of the radio dish, about halfway up the tower.

2.

general view of the building (or what's left of it!)

3.

Some kind of busted up fusebox contraption.

4.

The tower, just prior to climbing it.

5.

The underside of one of the dishes on the tower.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I like these. But, what's the point in shooting RAW if you're going to desaturate them?

I shoot in Raw for exposure purposes mainly. My screen isn't terribly readable in daylight, and my meter will occasionally lie to me. I'm not a fan of having to stop and check the histogram after each shot either. If figure I'm best off shooting in JPEG/RAW, that way if i get the shot with the JPEG, great, but if not, then I have a RAW file that i might be able to save the shot with. I've got a 4 gig CF card, and the camera is only 6MP, so space isn't really an issue. That and not all my images end up getting desaturated so for color work, having 12 bits of information works better for me.

cool stuff.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

Whenever I shoot RAW, I always use the RAW file due to my camera being a PnS, and the white balance is almost never right. I get to shoot RAW by using modded firmware, which poses a problem seeing as my RAW files from my last excursion disappeared & I have to find my mom's Casio so I can retrieve them, due to Canon's shitting shit only allowing you to access the folder with the images. I'm ready for christmas so I can get my 350D. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Shooting jpg compresses shadow detail, whether it's colour or not. Throwing away information unnecessarily is always a bad idea.

As for the pics, 1 & 2 are nice. 3 is a good idea, but the placement is wrong somehow - it needs either more of the box, or more of what's behind the subject on the left, but it's not quite working as is. 4 - you probably already know what's wrong with this one. Also, if you're using a dslr, clean your sensor. There's dirt on it, and it's showing up in the sky just to the right of the tower, about a quarter of the way up from the bottom. If it's not a dslr, clean your lens or get your camera serviced. 5 is just kinda whatever. Not enough of the subject to judge anything, although the framing idea is decent.

Also, solely personal taste here, sepia=bad unless you're actually toning photo paper with sepia. That's just me (and a bunch of film photographers) talking though.

yep.

Thanks mortimer, for your feedback.

I actually didn't notice the dust speck on shot 4, thanks for pointing it out. It feels like i just cleaned the damn thing yesterday though.

Again, thanks for your comments, I'll work on the framing, the place is pretty close by, so I may make a return trip soon.

Wow that place has changed A LOT since I was last there!!

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Apparently there used to be a car stashed there somewhere and a roof on the complex. I wish I could have seen em.
