Does anyone know what the spray painted markings on the street mean. I assume it has something to do with drains and stuff just wondering if anyone has a list. The only one that I can think of is "USA" there are some others that I have seen but can't remember. I'll see if I ca get a pic

Not always drains, lots of the time they're used to map out elevations, coordinates, datum points and mostly electrical/tv/phone wires for surveyors and contractors.

spray paint is used very often to tell where utilities are located.

In DFW the only color scheme that seems to appear with any regularity is a bright flourescent green used by Dallas Water Utilities, Im sure they bought 144000 cases of the stuff.

Contractors and other utility digging up service companies use whatever, usually day-glo orange or pink and it washes away after a few months.

When the fiber optic contractors came through a few years ago boring under sidewalks and driveways with their water jets they painted everything including peoples lawns.

While each region might have their own particular set of standards, this is the international code that's most commonly used:

Red = electric
Blue = potable water
Yellow = gas, oil, steam
Green = sewer, storm drain
Orange = communication
Pink = temporary survey markings
White = proposed excavation

I bet the U.s's are different, because we have a federal board that directs all the marking for any job that requires digging (water services, drainage, ect.)

Green = sewer, storm drain

Green is usually sanitary and storm drains the manholes are labeled as such with words, in my area at least.

Pink and white are unofficially interchangeable for any sort of surveying or notations or planned excavation or sidewalk/street repair or for proposed routes for new lines.
Orange could be telephone or cable-tv.
Also, alot of the cool tunnels are deep enough to not be hit by digging, which is what most survey markings are done for, so they don't always get marked.

Just down my street they have the street all marked up with orange and yellow marks. And there is a bunch of big metal drain/sewer piped and some of those blueish green pipes laying around. I think i found something worth exploring - Right at the end of my street!

I think they usually do that if they're about to take up the asphalt. When this happens the lids sit higher on the ground and I guess they paint the edges to prevent workers from tripping/driving over them. At least that seems to be the case here in Montreal.

I've noticed that some manholes are painted blue around here in ottawa. Not sure if it's related to the water system or moreso that lawnmower people don't hit them.

Greenish plastic pipe...up to about 3"-10" diameters...is probably going to be for natural gas or water. The yellow markings generally mean natural gas.

The bell-ended pvc pipes are used for water (blue or white typically) and drain/sewer as green pipe sections. It is quite typical to see a stack of either blue or white next to a stack of green pipes just prior to the city/county/state extending their pipelines along a new development, or as replacement for cast iron/lead/steel

Wikipedia has a decent page on it:
http://en.wikipedi...Utility_color_code

And here are some sample markings:

Hopefully that will be enough to start understanding them.
