| | | I've developed a sick facination with night shots... I HATE exploring at night but sometimes it just works out that way.... the composition isnt the best on these (camera doesnt really have a good viewfinder... as its digital and sucks bad.. who the hell even thought of doing that... ugh!!!) However I need some pointers!!!!!!!

| | | most of them seem to be a little out of focus. 1-3 all seem a little blurry, but the exposures look fine. 4. is great 5 - out of focus. cool concept though. 6 and 7 - not very interesting, exposure is good though. 7 is a little grainy. 8 is too dark 9 - crazy color, the orange throws me off 10 is too dark.
Overall its a good start.

I have to echo antyhero here. I am also still eeking my way through night shots. When I scrolled past 4 I had to back up and look again.
A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |

| | | Im not sure whats up with them being blurry... I used a tripod... (I need a new one, it is TOO light which might explain the blurriness wind and whatnot)

| | | How long were the exposures typically? Maybe you are getting some blurring just from the shutter button. I have had that problem plenty of times. Now anything under 30 seconds and I set the camera on a timer so I can step away and not touch the camera or the tripod. edit: sp [last edit 10/23/2007 5:18 PM by pezking4 - edited 1 times]

Duh, I have been saying that.... theres a wicked place right by my house (where I took the lightening shots) 30 seconds is max on this camera (another annoyance...)

I found a very easy, cheap way to get by that on the fly without a shutter release cable. Focus the shot, then cover the lens with your hand, depress the shutter (jostling the camera slightly) and then remove your hand.

* set white balance to inncodecent (sp?) it will make it less orange/red * use a remote or the timer feature. you pushing the button will cause the camera to shake and blur. * use a tripod whenever possible. * sometimes longer is better * it takes practice, but you'll sooner or later learn to know how long of an exposure is needed depending on the light. * have fun!

| | | I like night/low light photography too. Sometimes when the picture doesn't look that good, you can convert it to black and white. It does wonders.
Also, applying a blue filter to the picture helps to remove some of the star-shaped light around light source. i.e: Original picture:
Blue filter + Black and white + Sepia tone:
Sepia tone also help to give a different feeling to a picture Original:
Black and white + Sepia tone

another neat trick for long exposures is to let the flash go off so that the flash superimposes 1 second or so of whatever it hits onto the image.. makes a neat effect!
I will defeat that which was once untouchable only so that I may now move on |

| | | 1-3 aren't showing up. 4 - holy smokes! (haha, couldn't help it) I like it, though i'd crop out that green light thing near the bottom right corner. 5 - out of focus 6 - i like how the silhouettes of the trees are subtly framing the city. subtlety of anything is underrated, if you ask me. 7 - i agree with Bones, it's a little grainy 8 - a bit underexposed and somewhat blurry 9 - the orangeness is too intense, it distracts from everything else in and about the photo 10 - sweet reflections on the windows
for focusing in the dark, don't trust autofocus, do it manually. shine a flashlight or something (if you're close enough) on the subject if you need more light to focus. the self-timer is also quite helpful if (1) the tripod you're using happens to be slightly wobbly for whatever reason (if it's broken/damaged, missing a rubber foot, of the cheaper variety, if your camera is too heavy for it, if it has a mind of its own, etc.), and/or (2) if the tripod isn't on a flat & steady surface. if you set the self-timer and press the shutter button, the wobbling tripod will somewhat steady itself during the time between shutter button and open shutter. it's not guaranteed, but it has worked for me in the past.
