In my small town hobos are a non issue, but when I explore in Austin, I often stumble across their homes and hideaways, and walk past them on the street.
I have yet to meet a bad hobo, and I have spent hours on several occasions just talking with them. Ah one, Captain Johnson, he'd given up his job, house, and everything to live on the street and play music. He slept on the stoop of an abandoned church, and said that going inside, no matter how easy, could not be done because it was trespassing.

wow, thats somebodies gramma thats been abandoned to the street

not a crack head or wino by her looks, so how does that fit with all the recent UER theories about homeless people?

nice shot but real sad

ps: for the first time I got run off by three homeless squatters on some railroad property yesterday

I just said hey there what are y'all up to (smiling) and they yelled back "get outa here cop the railroad knows we're here and we arent hurting anyone"!

guess I was the trespasser !

She could have shelter, but prefers living in the middle of town.
Hot food is also available when she wants it; a local cop told me the deal with the homeless here. She probably should be committed, but there's little the cops can do to force her to leave or except shelter, and the hospitals for the insane no longer exist to serve the marginally ill like her.
Yeah this is a lot fucking better... the patients rights advocates and the lawyers did a swell fucking job. assholes.
She had recently been in the hospital for a week or two before this shot was taken.
The umbrella is over a bench that she calls home. It's piled full of blankets and she's there most of the time.
She's creepy, but harmless.

This one is a tricky issue with me. I have no issues with homeless -- they congregate in the park in front of my apartment tower all the time. But I've nearly been mugged by one. And on a more recent incident, I called the police on another who was selling drugs in my parking structure. He was wheelchair-bound, yet was selling drugs in the stairwell on the landing between the stairs (in an area he could wheel to but couldn't go anywhere else).

Never had a homeless encounter while exploring but I did find an encampment in an abandoned pier in Lower Manhattan back in the early '80s.

One summer a few years later I was walking up 6th Avenue (I think) when all of sudden, out of nowhere a tall skinny guy with long grey hair and beard, naked except for a jockstrap and rags wrapped around his feet starts running around like a crazy person and then disappears.

Worked in an electrical supply house and the state employment office sent us a worker who told us that he lived in a garage and near him was a potato chip manufacturer. He said that when the delivery drivers would return in the afternoon, the drivers would toss into the dumpster any damaged boxes of merchandise and he would fish them out and eat them. He would bring bags of chips and Fritos to work and share them with us. I don't remember eating any of them though...

I have never once had a homeless person encounter. Most of the are harmless ( I wouldnt sit and have a conversation with one like some of you ) but I would go spraying them with bear mace ither. There just people who have made some poor choices in life.

I've been attacked twice by mentally ill homeless, ironically both times in public, not while on UE. During exploration I've never once had a problem with any homeless folks I met; we just left each other alone.

My girlfriend scared a homeless guy by screaming at him. She later apologized.

I've ran into the homeless that were squatting in the building I wanted to go into... I hadn't spent much time looking, but saw one come out so I asked him how to get in.... I've seen remnants in a lot of the buildings I go in. I'm almost more afraid of a nasty mooed homeless person than the cops. Now I've adopted a simple philosophy for UE, Walk softly and carry a big light. I figure if it's dark enough and anyone wants to cause problems a 2 million candle power flashlight to the eyes will function as a nice deterrent.

I recently went to explore a house that had always caught my eye when driving by. It was an old two-story house with appealing craftsmanship. I went to the back door first, expecting it to be my point of entry, but a piece of metal had been screwed over the door in two places. At the front door I had a the same predicament, but the metal had only been secure in one place, so the it was easily turned out of the way. The electricity still worked and there was plenty of things in the house that, to my surprise, still turned on. I even found a working T.V. with decent reception, so I plopped down and relaxed in front of the news for a few minutes. I never actually met up with anybody, but from the looks of things there had been somebody living there. Most of the rooms had signs of recent humanity, from a 6 pack of gatorade with a few missing to.... a slimy stinky toilet. In one of the upstairs rooms I even discovered some clothes hanging in the closet. One room that drew my attention more than the others was a bedroom that was more difficult to get to than the others. Out of the 3 doors leading to it, only one worked, and most of them had towels stuffed under them. I assumed this was the room (Anonymous Person) had been sleeping in. A strangeness that I continually encountered was lists of, seemed like stuff in the house, that had been neatly written and laid on tables and counters around the house. In actuality, I think meeting some random homeless would have been cewl, but alas, i just searched around for about 45 minutes and then went on my way.

one of my favorite experiences happened in bmore. i saw a sign in an abandonated hospital that said:

burning food inside, keep out.

praise jesus

but the other two times weren't funny:

once octopus and i stumbled onto a huge colony of them and they were quite angry (cuz octo woke them up by breaking down a door) so they politely told us to GTFO or there'd be problems.

the other time one guy was sleeping outside the newark jail and we were quiet and didn't bother him.

at least he LOOKED like he was sleeping

leave the gun. take the cannoli.

I haven't encountered the homeless or the homeless insane while UEing. I've seen them wandering around the city plenty of times. There was this old lady in the subway that looked like she had severe scoliosis and was just standing there screaming her lungs out. No one did anything about it. It was like no one even noticed her there. But anyways, I'm getting off topic.

Transients are dime a dozen here. I come across them every freaking day, even if I'm not exploring.

I didn't meet Hobbo yet while exploring. I'm not sure about the idea of bringing a knife while exploring as it can bring more problem than actually solve em. I'm more likely to share smokes

We came across some very angry ones yesterday. It was a gorgeous day out, like 70 degrees, so we went exploring. We went to a site that we've been talking about for a while. We walk up to it and were justing taking pictures of the outside. We walk around the corner of the building and these three homeless were sitting in lawn chairs in the ruined parking lot. They start screaming at us to get away from their building and blah blah blah. We left peacefully. It was damned crazy.
