|  | | | Hi, I'm new to the forum here, and I guess I'm rather new to ue although I've been doing it off and on for about 10 years now.
Anyway, has anyone ever encountered either in an abandonment or drain homeless people living there? Not sure if they'd be dangerous or not, kind of hard to say. I'd think they'd be worried about their stuff and try to protect it, or maybe they'd avoid contact. I've never encountered one, but has anyone else? How did they react? Did they pose a threat, help you out or just leave you alone?

That being said, If the person is strung out on a cocktail of meth and heroin, there's not telling what they'll do, especially if you're in a mask and have a bright flashlight.

I may have worded it wrong a little, I made it seem like they're wild packs of wolves. But my general concern is that they might be scared of you when you're coming in and get the wrong idea as to why you're there.

Defiantly its a good idea not to bother them, and certainly taking pictures of their camp site shouldn't be done either. Certainly there are many reasons why not to run into a homeless person, they may have mental problems, or might be an addict. All and all, avoid them for the most part

| | | | I've come across several and as long as you don't disturb their camp or act like you are some type of authority, you should be fine. As bizarre as it seems, some enjoy visitors.
If you find a transient camp that looks occupied, but no one is in site, then best to keep moving and not disturb anything.
The ones to watch for are at all costs are ones used to manage pot farms or illegal drug activity.

Some homeless here in Philly will be grateful just for a cig, and might even be willing to show you around their home. But if they like the look of your new camera, be prepared with either a knife or steel maglite, cause they won't hesitate to kill you for your nice stuff.

Stabbing death sparks debate over Toronto panhandlers

The stabbing death of a St. Catharines man in Toronto after he and a friend refused to give money to panhandlers has revived the debate over panhandling in the city.
Ross Hammond, 32, was stabbed Thursday after a heated exchange with four people on Queen Street near Niagara Street.
Two men and two women were charged with assault, but Hammond died early Saturday of multiple stab wounds.
Hammond's death is the city's 51st homicide of the year.
The death has sparked the latest debate over panhandling in Toronto, where panhandlers such as Dave have become permanent and highly visible fixtures in Toronto's landscape.
"What harm do I do?" Dave asked CBC News as he sat on a milk crate, smoking a cigarette and holding out an empty coffee cup.
"I don't block the sidewalk. I don't curse at people. I don't ask straight out, just 'Have a nice day.' "
It's hard to see people like Dave as a threat, said John Duffy, who walked by and contributed some change to the coffee cup.
"The fellow I just gave money to is not somebody I expect to get into a group of four and stab people," he told CBC News. "But it's pretty scary when you think what happened to that poor fellow."
City Coun. Michael Thompson said he has no patience for panhandlers and is calling for a specific bylaw banning begging altogether.
"Those who think nothing ought to be done, I don't subscribe to those particular theories at all," said Thompson, who was attacked by a panhandler last year.
But Beric German with the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee said he's worried the killing of Hammond will label all panhandlers as aggressive.
"If there's a murder in the home, we don't go after all the people in houses."
The city is conducting a study into panhandling, but the study deals with non-aggressive panhandlers who are willing to be helped.

Actually i have. At an abandonment in northeast philly, a couple of my friends and i were wandering around the building when we heard someone coming down the steps. I immediately froze, and sure enough a homeless dude came striding into view with a knife in his hand. I shit you not, i was fuckin terrified. He kinda stared at us for a minute till i said "whatsup man?". I offered him a cigarette, which he took pretty quickly, and then he strode back upstairs. The creepiest thing was, he didn't say a damn thing the entire time we were face to face. That and the fact that he didn't put his knife away made me really nervous, but i was just glad he didn't do anything crazy. I guess it helped that A: i had cigarettes, and B: i didn't have my camera out!

So there've been 51 murders in the city of Toronto this year and one happened to involve a homeless person. What exactly are we supposed to be thinking about here?

Several people who have recently traveled through Toronto have all noted to me, that there is a serious homelessness problem. I've noticed it too, but I guess I've grown climatized to it, which is bad because you do not see the amount of mentally incognizant people in NYC as you do here, and the city is more the double the size.
I decided to pull up some crime stats because I noticed your from St.Catherines, which isn't the lowest crime rate city in the world, and I found something interesting....
Toronto's murder rate is 1.8 per 100,000 and St.Catherines is 1.6
Toronto's car theft rate is 325 per 100,000 but St.Catherines is MUCH HIGHER @ 354
St.catherines almost has double the amount of break ins and 737 vs. Toronto @ 449.
Ontario also has the lowest rate of crime, and Nunavut and NWT top the list.
Homelessness is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed but your scaremongering a meager social issue here, when ironically you hail from a city that has a higher crime rate then Toronto.
Just saying.........
