| | | Here are a few random photos that I would like to share with the UER community... Feel free to add your thoughts...
This is my very first attempt at an HDR. I don't know if it turned out okay or not.
This is just a picture of the small houses and chapels scattered along the shore of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia...
This is a poem (or whatever) I found on a chalk board on the balcony of a WPH building. I find it profound for some reason. [last edit 9/9/2007 2:26 AM by Jake Noodles - edited 2 times]

| | | 1 - Too much orange for my taste. I'm a bit at a loss in terms of what to recommend to improve it, because I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to show. From a composition standpoint, the lighthouse is not the focal point; there is too much headroom, the rock in the bottom is in focus, and there are people (which always attract attention). I'd either re-shoot with a shorter depth of field, or crop the bottom to get rid of the rock, the left to get rid of the people, then match the right side. After all that, you may find that the amount of sky you have showing gives a feeling of isolation. If not, crop it down too. Also, if you have to tone the image, sea and sky skapes tend to look better in blue (in my opinion... others may disagree). 2 - As an HDR shot, it did not come out at all. The whites are very flat and blown out, the greens feel muted, and the red building doesn't pop. I think the subject isn't helping... the sky looks pretty boring, and HDR does great things with sunsets and contrasty clouds and things like that. How did you try to make this into an HDR shot? Again, I am having a hard time figuring out what to look at. I don't see anything that particularly screams UE in this (unless the town is abandoned, but the photo doesn't tell me that story). The composition doesn't lead my eye anywhere, and I can't see a subject to focus on. If you can get the red building to pop and mute the rest of it, that would help. You might also want to crop this to a panorama... lose half the sky, half the ground below the horizon, and the left side a little bit to the rocks. 3 - Not a very good shot. As profound as the lyrics may be, what is the difference between this and the dust jacket from the album? The idea that this is graffiti lends itself to the fuck authority theme, but there is no context, and the image doesn't tell me anything. Looking at the image should give me the same feeling as reading the lyrics, and right now it doesn't. Another approach would be to isolate a single thought... right now there are too many words to take it in in just a quick glance. If there is a particular line that strikes you, perhaps a macro of just that line. Altogether, a tough subject to photograph artistically.

| | | Did you forget to tone map the HDR? Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

I'm pretty sure the first shot is actually the HDR, not the second. I don't know what you did to the HDR to make it so orange, but it makes it very difficult to look at.

| | | I did not have a single clue in this big world as to what I was doing in my attempt in that lighthouse HDR... I took all my pictures and changed the gamma, edited the colors... It was a nightmare.. I did some new HDR's, which have turned out pleasant.. Here they are...

hehehe!!! Turned out to be song lyrics from Pennywise huh? "Rock" must be a bit profound!
....and do try HDR again if you want to get the hang of it, but know that this attempt is not very good. second attempts are better, but the light stroke that follows the cars roof is pretty unacceptable. But you've improved already, so keep trying and ask questions!

| | | Jake_Noodles, these show some potential, but you might want to pick up a couple of books on basic photography first before you start messing around with post-processing effects. Learn the basics first and worry about the cheesy effects later. http://photo.net/learn/ is a good starting point as well.

| | | I intentionally put the light stroke in the photo; I thought it looked impressive. I know my HDR's are amateur at the moment, but I definitely plan to keep working on them. I will practice and keep learning. Thank you all for your fair, (at some times tough) criticism. I will take your suggestion and get a few books on photography and HDR, Martino...

You're awfully quick to assume that the people criticizing Jake's work haven't done HDR's themselves. He's taken his criticism in good stride and more than likely it will help him on his future attempts. It would seem to me that the people who are chiming in critically about the HDR probably know something about technique. And not to jack Jake's thread, but since you want some evidence of HDR experience:
Finally, keep it up Jake, shoot me a PM if you want to talk HDR stuff in detail. Pirate.
