|  | | | This is my first post after having been registered for several weeks. I've spent that time reading many many many of the previous posts and viewing lots of pics. Let me say that my mouth is hanging open in awe and admiration of the some of the work I've seen posted here.
I'm only a beginner and I've already learned so much. Here's the biggest lesson so far:
Anyone can 'take' a picture (especially these days with a digital camera set on auto), but in order to 'make' a picture you must have knowledge of the camera, skill and creativity among other things.
I have a LONG way to go before my pics look anything like the work I have seen here.
Thanks for sharing the strangely beautiful, captivating art. I look forward to learning so much more.

Some of the Artsy pics are sweet but the best shots are from the people who try to tell a story with their pis. The shots that make you feel like you were in the room with the photographer when they took it. Thats what I look for.
Some of the best shots are the ones that were clicked when running out of a location from Johnny LAW! 
Get a camera, find a location and try to have fun. If Artsy photos are your interest...go for it. Love to see them all.

I love artsy photos... sometimes. When it's a new way to look at something or a different framing from what I've seen before, I can appreciate that.
On the other side, I can also appreciate people who just take snapshots as references almost as a photographic memory device.
The ones I personally don't care for are staged shots. If a chair is in a corner, why is it in that corner? Was someone set there as punishment? Was it a stepping device? Why is that lawn mower in the middle of the field? Did someone try to steal it? Was someone seriously hurt while operating it and they just left it there?
It's like when I'm at a gathering and there is that one person who is like "Smile for the camera!", I really do not like that person. It doesn't capture the moment, it captures how you want it to look like.
I got to admit though, some of these pictures are very breathtaking. Is it a requirement to take a photo class before you UE?

More and more I have been leaving the camera at home or in the car and just enjoying the location for all the wonderful things inside. It's amazing what you can miss when you are there focusing on what will make a nice photo. The first time I went into a local asylum without a camera, it was amazing what I noticed that I didn't when I took my camera all the other times.
Best advice I can give is to take the photos for yourself. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about them, as long as you like them and they capture the memories you want to take away with you then that is all that matters. I only take photos to help me remember the locations a bit better.

| | | | Amen, to me exploring should be about exploring... not raping every location you see for pretty pictures. Some of my most cringe worthy exploring moments have been climbing through a window into a location only to see 5 people rip their cameras out straight away and race to get their shots before anyone else.
I visited Trenton recently, and it seems all I did was race around taking photos... I wish I'd taken the time to just chill, soak up the atmosphere and ambiance of it. Get a feel for it, before snapping away you know.
Lastly, what happens when the locations you're hitting become so dodgy you can't take photos at all?

It really bothers me when I'm reading a post where someone's just trying to share something they found, and the responses are all tearing apart their photography skills... sure we all like to take a nice picture sometimes, and I suppose every hobby needs it's select few experienced photographers, but that's not AT ALL what this is about.

Its wonderful to see beautiful pictures of these places that have been long forgotten, but its also somewhat difficult to tell what a place looks like by viewing nothing but macro shots of peeling paint and old door knobs.
Also, the only pictures I would really tear apart is ones where someone asked for my opinion. However once in awhile someone will post a blurry, out of focus, what-the-hell-is-that type of picture and I have no clue what its suppose to be. When I see those, its kind of hard to not say anything. I just don't understand how some people find it acceptable to post a picture of a building at night in the rain that they took with their camera phone and apologize because we can barely make out what it is. Then they expect us to take their word for it, that it was a really cool place. So why even post a crappy picture?
But... thats just my opinion.

i agree. that's the way i look at it. to me UE is about: A. exploring, B. taking photos for documentation purposes C. taking photos for creative purposes D. applying the history you learned about the site prior to exploring once you're in certain rooms or see certain things on site.

I'm not a photographer by any means and I use a simple Canon A540. None of my pictures are noteworthy, but I enjoy looking back at them and thats what matters to me.
With that being said, there are definately some fabulous pics and photographers on this site.

In all honesty I certainly admire a lot of the artistic shots found on this site, but I really enjoy the sets that have a running narrative and try to draw you in to the experience of having been there.
