| | | What is that? A balance beam drain? I bet that's tough on a bicycle.
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

Last time I rode drains, I tried to sneak past this sleeping homeless guy without waking him up (unsuccessfully)...
and had a pretty good down hill ride...
before I had to backtrack to the cage...
So rather than ride back uphill for a half mile or so and wake the poor guy up again, I dismantled my bike and shoved the parts through the grate...
stood on the frame and pushed the manhole cover off and tied a piece of stinky black-mud string to the frame...
and pulled it up and re-assembled it on top.
I was sweaty, tired and stinky but I still like to ride drains.
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

Man I was friggin' beat! It was late last Summer. Hot as hell. The manhole was 8 feet up in the center and I had to push the cover off with a short 2x4, jump up off my bike frame, grab the rim and hoist my fat ass up through the hole while not letting go of the slimy stinky string I dug out of the black mud at the bottom that was tied to my bike frame. Then the frame wouldn't fit through the hole so I wrestled with the forks and handlebars for a REALLY long time and then had to take a victory photo. Might have been easier 30 or 40 years ago. Four people died there?! Creepy.

| | | Well I know if I see 3 people before me jump into some water and not come back out, I'd do the most logical thing and jump in myself. Its just the natural order of things. [last edit 8/23/2007 2:33 PM by Happiedaze - edited 1 times]

This was something that was truly a sad situation. If you look at your picture, you see the water right at the bottom of the slot that it flows through, that wasn't how it was designed, it was supposed to be about 5' below that and only about 4' deep total. The city in all their wisdom because the pumps were replaced with the wrong kind that were much more powerful and strong and because they worked better with it full, filled it up to more or less to the top making it about 8' deep. someone fell in and the drain at the bottom sucked them under and held them to the drain, when others jumped in they got stuck in the churning flow of water and they drowned. It was similar to getting caught in a riptide. The solution "SHOULD" have been to install a simple stainless steel grate, which wouldn't deteriorate, about 12" below the surface so if someone fell in they wouldn't get hurt and yet you wouldn't see it and it would not have screwed up the design. Instead, what I understand, I haven't been there yet since, they built a fence around it along with a bunch of other stuff at a cost of several million dollars. What can you say, spend millions in consulting fees and thats what you get, they wouldn't listen to common sense. On with the fun stuff! I have to say 2X it looks like you started something, pretty cool series everyone has created. I was sorta surprised, I looked through a bunch of my shots and have no arches! Of course my nick is for "Architectural Imaging" My side business, not that I have any time for shooting with my workload lately! Here is a shot though that at least has a curve! Hope that works! Some bad artifacts I never cleaned up but I still liked it! hahaha
BTW 2x , hope ya saw my post on the grand! I'll keep ya posted! [last edit 8/25/2007 12:17 AM by Arch-Image - edited 3 times]
