Went on a recon mission deep into the wilds of Placer Co. today, looking for some diggin's and some mines to document now, and artistically capture at a later date. Unfortunately, all I had to go by was my goldfish memory ("I think there's something here...maybe.") and ye olde woefully inadequate Delorme map, which doesn't even hold a candle to the topo map I was looking at of the area earlier. The metals of the Mother Lode may have mostly played out, but the miners sure left behind a mother lode of holes in the ground and town sites--places like Bake Oven, Deadwood, Sunny South, and more in this area alone--looking for it.

The old man and I found two out of the whole lot today: an unnamed mine, and one with a name and a lot of treasures.

Unnamed mine

We rounded the corner and saw locally mined schist carefully stacked up to form a retaining wall. Peering deeper into the shadows formed by overhanging trees, I saw a dark hole set into the hillside. Bingo!

Two ways of entry here: a ramp for vehicles, and these steps:

Drainage pipe sticking out of the retaining wall:

Hop on in, the water's fine (and full of arsenic, mercury, and cyanide):

Drainage pipes:

Some of the local flora:

Part of the portal. There ain't no "camera shake filter" in PS, unfortunately, and me without my tripod. It was a bit dark and mosquito-ridden back there.

The entrance itself:

Inside were several lengths of medium-sized pipes stacked up, a warped clipboard and some other stuff. The shaft, which curved tantalizingly off to the left and blocked further view into its depths, was high enough that one could stand up while walking around in it.

Around the corner from the site of Ditch Camp was a mine site littered with treasures.

The view from the road:

This was either an airshaft, or shaft for lifting ore out with associated (now gone) headframe. It's now all filled in. Judging from the area in which I walked, it looks like the owner either dragged out equipment in the mine and tossed it around, or there was a building here at some point which stored all of the treasures I found.

Just a few things:

I stacked these two up:

The place was littered with fridge doors, car parts, old cans, Ball jars--all sorts of stuff. Down the hill were some adits which I didn't find, burned out cars (there was a fire that went through there some time ago), and quail. The quail chicks were chillaxin' on the dirt road when I came stomping through. At first I thought they were oddly colored lizards since I saw them in my peripheral vision, but Mom Quail came busting out of the berry brambles into which they ran and started playing the old "My wing's broken! Eat me instead!" game. Wish I had some pictures of that.

All in all, it was a good day. The scenery couldn't be beat either. I hope to return for some film shots and find more mines/town sites. After all, how can you resist going to a place named Bear Wallow?

Just a word of warning. If this is the mine I'm thinking of, take care. There is a family (by family I mean one jackass that claims it is his family) that has a claim on it. One individual has been jailed before for shooting at "trespassers." There is a guy that lives in the area who spends more time "patrolling" his claims than working on them. Sometimes he'll confront you himself, other times he'll call the Placer County Sheriff Office without you knowing it. Make claims of you threatening him with guns, death threats, ect. Either way, the S.O. will show up with guns drawn and try to scare you off.

The 3rd from the last pic is really cool. Is that a TV or a Fridge?

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

The one with the chrome on top is a wood, natural gas, or oil room heater.

A little update on the "family" man who wanders around. I believe you are referring to Robert Morey, AKA Backwoods Bob, AKA Machette Bob etc... I was up there near Last Chance when I encountered him. He was filthy. He had tons of dirt caked on his ankles, which I could see because he was wearing highwaters. He also had a bunch of equally filthy dogs, mongrels. I had a .357 and my uncle had my 40 cal glock. I believe thats what kept us safe. He was very interested in my weapons, kept asking to look at them. We, of course, refused. He then invited us to see his mine. Again I refused. I had a bad feeling about him. There is some good news. Shortly after our encounter he was arrested for attempted murder. He beat a friend of his nearly to death with a tree branch. We were not his friends so who knows how far he would've gone with us. Anyways, as far as I know he is still locked up in Vacavilles mental hospital/prison. My cousins friend was in on the arrest and kept us posted. I also read that the sherriffs dept. gathered up all of his dogs. That whole situation was tougher than getting into the Sutter Buttes missile base.
