Be a bitch to run out of O2 a few feet short, but that could never happen Call me bad; just use the acetylene to back filled the area behind the door and ignite. May have to play with the agent and ratio. You will most likely suffer badly if you try this, but it's your collapsed lungs, not mine.

| | | Actually any hydrocarbon mixed with LOX is something even I wouldn't want to be too close to. I know an old missile guy that said they would put a bit of asphalt and LOX in a coffee can and throw rocks at it.

It's fun stuff. Years ago at an R&D center a worker who was smoking a cigarette next to a large open insulated pail of LOX. Guess he thought it be cute to do. Instant explosion, and one severely burned worker.

| | | That shit ain't to be fucked with. They used to do a little demonstration in missile school, with a small amount of oil and LOX in a test tube and drop it. It ALWAYS got people's attention. And for good reason too since they would be working on missiles that the skin was as thick as a dime and would collapse under their own weight if not pressurized or in their fixture during repairs. 5 billion gallons of kerosene and LOX in a hole in the ground has ended in tragedy more than once. You'd find the silo doors in the next county, I forget how many tons they each weighed......

| | | Welds are usually hardened because they have been tempered by the heat of the weld (unless it's a shitty weld). But yes, they're stronger than the steel they bond.

Yeah your a welder? Then you must no away to get the torches and plasma cutter to a building, right? How about air pressure for the plasma?

They do have portable oxy/acetylene tanks that you can carry, but you need to make sure that you let the acetylene set for a half hour before doing any cutting, those tanks are finicky and HAVE to be stood upright when welding. Other wise they can start to get a bit dangerous. I too have welding experience and this is the most plausable solution to this. Other than looking for another way in or drilling out the hinges if possible.

I weld a lot for work, and I also explore. When you explore you have to remember that you can't be carrying a shit load of stuff, like bottles of oxygen. You also can't be making a lot of noise, like if you used a cordless grinder. I'd say forget it, look for another way in.

| | | I agree with many people here -- just look for another way in, it's really not worth it. On one hand, you're carrying a whole lot of weighty stuff, and if your idea of fun isn't carrying around your own weight in tools, you're out of luck. On the other, can you imagine how incriminating carrying most of that is? You get caught, and you're finished. It's just not worth it ...

Overhead vent and rappel down, or a gasoline powered cut-off wheel like the kind EMS use. Drill out the lock. A gallon of gasoline, the correct amount of time and application and a flare gun can make steel tunnel bulkheads become unhinged. oops, did I just say that? It's a really dumb ass practice to seal tunnels like this, because a vapor explosion is easy to do, but doesn't always explode if the ratio isn't within tolerance. Still gas isn't that expensive... and there are other alternatives as well. If you try this, you may end up being very sorry, and possibly dead. Not recommended. Metal trash cans were never safe at my house when I was a teen....
Companies and officials should never use solid barriers to seal shut large tunnels. It creates a greater risk than it solves. Either back fill, leave open, or use bars. duh.
or do it the easy way and ask for permission, this works surprisingly well sometimes.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |
