| | | | how do you protect yourself? weapons wise. < on 3/28/2007 11:54 PM >
| | | Im a noob to the UE scene. But it would really make me nervous if i went into an abandoned building without a gun, pepper spray or a knife. What do you guys pack? also has there ever been a time where some one or something <animal< tried to attack you?

But really I've never run into any trouble to the point that I've felt threatened when exploring.

| | | Try to be unarmed when you go trespassing. It makes talking your way out of trouble alot easier. The list of things to beat the hell outta people with Alabaster provided should serve you pretty well. If the site is that bad, bring friends. Friends that look like they carry weapons. Lots of 'um.

| | | My hands. I'm a scrapper, what can I say. I always carry my Search and Rescue knife (throw off of the K-Bar, but not as nasty looking). For me thats more then enough. As far as being caught with it? Not worried about it. I carry it on a load bearing vest so that its out in the open and easily accessible at all times. A lot of what gets people into trouble isn't what they have with them, it's their mouth. Now carrying a concealed, thats a whole different story. I would advise against that.

Why would someone with weapons try to talk their way out of it ;) May I suggest?

If you're that nervous about entering an abandoned building, perhaps UE is not for you.....

Well, the people inside are part of the experience. Don't take a weapon. If that scares you, you should probably just get one of these:

| | | Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to protect yourself against crazy hobos camped out in abandoned buildings. Except laugh. Honestly.. I can't recall anyone here who's ever had a violent confrontation with someone living in an abandonment. I'd be more concerned about falling through a floor or dying from inhaling something a pigeon shat out.

| | | I live in a quiet town, so I don't really feel the need for protection (weapons, knifes, etc) I also think carrying weapons in a UE site is a bad idea, in most situations it does not worth the risk.

I've one for you. 'I narrowly escaped a beating from a homeless guy walking around this old gasworks with a rather solid looking table leg. I sucked wall next to a window as he walked past peering into all the buildings looking for me. As he went around the back of the building I packed my gear (you never realise how loud zippers are until times like this) and evacuated quite quickly.' One incident in 5+ years... I wouldn't be worried about it.

| | | whatever you do is up to you, but fwiw i am an investigator by trade. i often am the guy that does the advance [scouting] portion of a surveillance. this means i work alone and i also go into the very most rural and lonely areas of NY,pa,oh, and wv. that's not even to mention the shitty urban areas i work in. this has led me to alot of good sites cause i often get part of the day to myself when either the job goes tits up or i am successful and now have extra time.
all that bullshit said, i always carry a very small and concealable firearm, i also always do a very thorough scout of any site i enter, and as much research as i can do. this usually ensures my safety and if i think i may have a problem, i usually don't go there. your situational awareness is your first line of defense, and if you pay attention it's usually the only thing you need. the other lines of defense are for when you have already fucked up. don't let any of the sob sisters here dissuade you on that count, but you must make your own decisions as to what you are prepared to do or carry, and the consequences you are prepared to pay ]either way] eoghan

I understand your thoughts on this issue. I really didn't want to have to type that but you never know (turning it against you). Gun different issue all together. But there was a time when I was younger (15) I had this kid in my neighborhood who thought he was bad ass. We got in to a argument on the bus home from school. He wanted to fight me. He showed up at the park (which I still live in front of) with a bat. I walked up to him, and before he knew it I had the bat. 2 hits to the arm and it was broke. I left him his bat and went home. Half hour later the cop's were at my house and the ambulance was at his. I did 10 hours service and anger management. I had to go all through high school even (a few more run in's) with counseling. I never started any of these incidences, but let the rage get the best of me. I am a hell of a lot better now. No drug's needed even, just need a quiet place is all.
