Does Waverly Hills Sanitorium count?

I have always been into UE, as a child I explored an old shoe factory in my town. I, like many of you, saw the 'Spooked' documentary on the Sci Fi channel last year and in Aug of 2006 I convinced my girl friend to go with me out to Kentucky to see it in person. I found this site just yesterday and I'm trying to get into how things work here and see who is who. But I was surprised to see that Waverly is not on the locations list. Is it because it is too tourist like? Or has no one bothered to post it? If it's ok I would like to add it to the list when I become a full member, I really like Waverly, and despite being over run by people looking for a ghost I think the building it's self is a beautiful piece of architecture.

Actually Waverly Hills is in the UEDB because you're not a full member of UER (to learn more about becoming a full member read this: http://www.uer.ca/...asp?threadid=19032

So yes it does count. And welcome to UER.

You don't see it on the list because you have to be a full member to see locations that haven't been demolished yet.

I'm not too familiar with Waverly, but in my opinion, some places are touristy beccause they are just amazing, and the whole "everybody and their uncle" factor doesn't matter. Kind of like Michigan Central Station. Everybody's been there - it still takes brass balls to go there (not in the best part of the country), it's an amazing structure, and has great historical significance. Nobody's going to give you shit for going to Waverly just because you didn't "discover" it yourself.

Also, this is probably the first time I've ever heard of a ghost being mentioned on this entire forum. Who you gonna call.......

I've always wanted to go to Waverly Hills, but being a 16 year old who lives in Minnesota does not help. I smell a road trip coming on.

If anyone hasn't been there and is interested, I have some pretty good pictures in my webshots album. They are nothing like the pictures you guys take, and my camera is no where near as good so please don't rate them

http://travel.webs...um/552008135svjpKh

Also I have a small history of the place in my UE section of my website if anyone is interested reading a little.

And before anyone says anything, the picture of the picture of Black Diamond at the top of the page is not mine, I'm in the precess of making new pics and that one is temporary. I gave credit to DanHaga at the bottom of the page. That is all... enjoy.

If I remember correctly from another post on here a ways back they are trying to repair Waverly and they also do tours for a small fee.. I may have it mistaken with another place though.. In my opinion, if you can check a place out without the risk of being screwed with or arrested then thats a bonus..

you're correct. When I went was $25 a person for a regular tour. If you wanted to stay 1/2 or a whole night it was some where around $50-$100. And they are using the money to repair the building and turn it into a haunted bed & breakfast among other things. I think that it is great that buildings like Waverly are being re-born into something useful instead of left to die. Before the current owners bought the place in 2001 the previous owner tried to demolish it. To build the worlds biggest statue of Christ. (yep, I'm not kidding) But since the building was on the national historical list he wasn't allowed to just out right tear it down. So he opened the place up to vandals and anyone that wanted to break and spray paint things. So for the next couple years the place was vandalized to no end and the owner dug out a very considerable amount of ground from the foundation around the building in an effort to make the foundation crack. But since the building continued to stand he sold it to the current owners.

If you explored it than yes it does count. I don't think it should matter if its tourist like but that's just my opinion. I'm also surprised no one started the age old flame war yet.

To 'explore' Waverly, one must pay the fee and take the tour, as mentioned above. Sadly, a security guard sits on the site 24/7, and apparently does a good job deterring potential trespassers.

I have heard that it is possible, just have to watch out for him

I don't know what it is like during the week. But Fri-Sun there are a lot more then one guard. There are a few at the main entrance that check names, 2 per floor inside during tours, and others in the laundry room that more then likely wander the grounds. Some are also packing (see pic). During the week I think they do the restoration work so there is probably contractors too. I would recommend just paying the $20, the money goes into the building anyway.

If the heat packing picture didn't make you think twice about trying to get in there without paying for a tour then I'll just add my first hand experiences. There has been 24X7 surveillance for quite some time, but the guards seemed to care more about having a good time than protecting the building in the past. I got caught walking around there one day and they just told me to come back that night for 10 bucks and they would let me in. Much more laid back approach.

The last time I tried going up there, I parked at the apartments and started up through the woods on the back side and bam there they were. It was the middle of the week and there was definitely more than one so they don't just hang out up top like they used to. They were much more hostile than previous encounters and seemed like they were out looking for a fight. Some of my friends echoed my story. I just don't think its worth it to try to get in any other way than the legitimate one. I think the difference is that they are working hard on restoring the building where they didn't really have a plan years ago.

I had a friend that volunteered to help clean up the building. Thus he didn't have to pay and got to take pictures during the day at his leisure. I don't know if they still do that but it's probably worth looking in to.

Here is a link to their website about the tours if people are interested.

I've been in there, and it's worth checking out- no risk of getting caught is definitely a bonus.

But if you're into photography, take an overnight. Up to you if it's worth the money. I took one of the regular tours, and they moved so fast I never had time to set up any shots or use my tripod. Had to do everything handheld in fading light, and it was a bitch. Really didn't get much to speak of.

Since my parents live in Louisville and I've got plenty of other reasons to go there, I think I might do a half night sometime- and make sure I bring plenty of light sources.

If you are interested in folk lores and ghost stories, Waverly Hills would be the place for you. History? Not so much. When I first went there in 2003, the owners were quite open and nice, and let us wander about pretty much wherever, and let us take a lot of photographs.

But that's since changed with the advent of all the Ghost Hunting television shows, and they have since distorted the history on the tours to a certain bit, even thrilling up the "Death Tunnel" -- which is fine, but at least tell the real reason behind it.

The daytime tours are pretty brisk and there is no time to compose a great photo. $20 gets you a video in the laundry room and a walkabout. Nighttime tours are worse. Typically, they are packed with ghost hunters from the Louisville Ghost Hunting Society or elsewhere, and cost $50 for 1/2 night and $100 for one full night, and are not great for photography what-so-ever. Lighting is awful, there are just too many people around, and you typically roam in groups.

To top it off, they were recently throwing concerts at the place. Not the savory concerts, but heavy pedal that apparently drew the wrong crowd. Concert-goers were apparently defecating in people's lawns near the place, there was trash littering everywhere, and it drew a _lot_ of complaints, especially since there is a Jack Nicholas signature golf course at its base.

I have connections in Louisville, now, and it's not that long a drive. Maybe that can be next summer's road trip; if you can drag TC away from his psych he's looking at.

There are far better places to visit in the Louisville metro than Waverly. Like, look five minutes north of the city at that big gray blob seen in Google Maps...

seicer, what are they saying the tunnel was used for now? just curious what sort of stuff they are concocting.

They only had one concert up there that I was aware of. It was Gwar and I thought it would be an interesting place to see them. Almost went and then decided against it since it was an all day metal fest. A friend told me I made the right choice after he saw someone push over a port-a-potty , door faced down, with someone in it. And then he saw another guy forcefully vomiting in some mud pit and, immediately after, someone unknowingly jumped in. Kids these days...

It was used to cart supplies, but the owners are stating that it was used to transport bodies. It does make the tunnel seem more plausible and "spooky" that way -- especially since the tours are focused around the ghostly aspects of the place.

As for the porta-potty comment... wow. I guess the neighbors did have valid complaints after all
