Carrying a knife
< on 3/20/2007 7:14 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Would anyone consider carrying a knife along expeditions as advisable or not recommended, I myself usually carry one, for both protection against unforeseen circumstances, and to infiltrate areas, where a knife would come in handy (cutting a rope to enter the only way possible). I just want to know what you think and what yourself do.

it's bigger than an average pocket knife though, but it's so sharp and dependable, I can't leave it...

but beyond that, it seems as though most will bring a knife, though say you were caught, would there be any trouble from the feds?

Many areas will put a legal limit on blade length. I would check your local laws and find out if theres a maximum size blade you can carry. I carry a knife with me almost everywhere I go. Not necessarily for protection, but also because you just never know when you're gonna need one.

I have a small swiss army on my keys and a slightly larger swiss army in my backpack. That normally does the job. A Leatherman tool works as well.

I wouldn't use a knife for defence. Theres a higher chance it will get used against you.

that old bullshit about a weapon being more likely used against the owner is pure, total bullshit. absolutely, total, bullshit. it's not true. the statistic about guns being used against you was a fabrication and was discredited many many years ago. the only people who have to worry about being shot with their own gun are cops, and that's only because they have to wrestle with the badguys instead of shoot them.

Hey man, I don't know one way or another. My philosophy is that talking, running, and not getting into a confrontation to begin with are the best defences.

I much prefer having nothing that can be interpreted as a weapon. But I am a big guy, and keys works as well as a knife for defense.

I see no reason to carry one. It's incredibly easy to get a knife away from someone who doesn't know how to properly use it. So unless you've got the skills, it probably won't protect you if you get to the point where you'd need it.

Also, if a cop's going to be an asshole about having just a camera, you can imagine how they'd react if you have a knife too. Doesn't matter if it's within the legal limit for blade size, if a cop's going to arrest you or get you in trouble, they'll try to stick any charge they can to you.

If you need to use a knife to get into a location, you probably shouldn't be going in anyways. This is UE, not B&E.

Just my 2 cents.

Anyone packing a knife that gets jack up, deserves it. Knives are for assaults, not defense.
Cops will love those lame excuses like "I'm just a country boy" or "it's just a habit". Cops have a funny habit too... of pointing a #12 shotgun at armed suspects. Don't sneeze.

I like my tripod, but my camera with a 70-200L on it will do too. That's a 5 pound mallet right there.

word. D2H + 80-200 2.8 = weapon.

on topic, though, i have a knife on me all the time. a gerber paraframe II, 3.5 inch blade, legal to carry in Colorado. you never know when you may need the simplest of all tools.

do you know how to waltz?

When it comes to using a camera for defense, nothing beats the Minolta SRT-102.

Seriously, I could kill a man with that thing and still shoot all day with perfect shutter timing.

I miss Minolta...
