pics or hardcore exploring?

i have found that while exploring, it can go one of either two way. sometimes, i really like to take my time and get lots of pictures, other times, i like to get as much exploring in as possible. taking pictures takes larges chunks out of exploring time. going on an all out exploring assault on the place generally makes me want to not stop for pictures. i have found that making seperate trips for the two is the best way to do it. anyone have any strategies that they use? strictly photos? strictly exploring?

I always take a few pics on the fly the first time in, just so I can get a better look when I'm back home. But later trips are the ones where I really slow down for photos.

The other reason that I make sure to take at least a few photos every time is that it allows you to use the time-honored photography excuse if you're caught.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

I don't usually do too much actual "exploring".

I need to split the time between video and photography, so that can get overwhelming at times. It's not the biggest problem though, its usually just carrying the equipment that gets difficult. Tripod, maglite, pro video camera, digital camera... Sometimes I think I should just choose one, but I'd much rather do it all!

Explore, then take photos. Why does it need to be two separate trips?

i find that if you take a seperate trip for strictly exploring and seeing all that you can see, you will be able to take the time to explore every square inch of a place and search through files and cabinets and tunnels anything you can. taking pictures kind of takes away from that because being more focused on pictures makes you tend to have less interested in seeing everything, but more on getting that perfect shot. thats just my personal opinion though, some people may be able to do both. who knows

also, going there for exploring first can help you get a good idea of what you want to shoot, then mull it over in your brain before you go back.

There is a similar thread already, but its in the archives.

That said, I always make the first trip out to a location equal parts exploring and taking pictures, but on return trips I usually focus on one aspect. For example, on my return trip to Anchor Glass, my main goal was to explore the parts of the complex I missed previously and to look at the old documents scattered around.

When I'm in a site that's in any way active for the first time, I'm just not up for photos. I want to get a feel for the place before I encumber myself with a tri-pod. Besides, my first time in an active site, I'm all shaky handed at least part of the time.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

I'm a photographer first, explorer second. Since most of the time I'm in a location it is hours away from where I live, and I never know when I'll be back, if ever, I always make sure to get the shots I want first and foremost.

You're right, I can't believe I was such a pansy as to set up and take a shot like this. I mean, you can see Niagara Falls down there at the end of the tunnel, but imagine how much more hardcore me and my companions would have been had we gone to all that trouble to get down there and then not taken pictures. That's full-on Urban Exploration Calvinism there, hardcore like the Diet of Frakking Worms.

Oh wait, I went down to the Falls, and then came back and took that photo. But really, it would have been better if I'd just left at that point. *eyeroll*

You couldn't have enjoyed it much if you stopped because other people were using different techniques than you were.

I'm being so fascetious here, because this strikes me as a stupidly artificial extremism. Unless you're pressed by time or circumstances, there's no reason you can't explore the place, get your bearings, and then move back through it to do your photography or whatever other documentary method you're employing. And there's no reason you can't spend tonnes of time examining drawers and log books, you just have to balance that against the impulse to waste time capturing more generic hallway sublime. Instead of hallways, take photos of drawers. Problem solved.

If you're committed to making photographs, you'll find a balance where you can do so, except when for whatever reason you can't. If you're not committed to taking photographs, then you probably won't care one way or another. If you have all the time in the world to visit your neighbourhood asylum or empty warehouse, then enjoy it. If you don't have that time, well, you're probably not busy worrying about whether you should kiss on the first date or not.

this obviously got lost in translation somewhere, sometimes i type without thinking. apologies. what i meant was more along the lines of trips meant for exploring, trips meant for photgraphs. obviously, someplaces dont permit that kind of freedom(niagra falls douche), but do you sometimes feel more like exploring than photographing, and sometimes more for the latter?

I can balance the two.
I usually will set up a shot, and whilst exposing will go around that particular area(whatever it may be) and look for whatever i'm looking for(more shots to take, more stuff to look at, read, or what have you).
