No I saw some example of pictures I really thought were amazing only to find out they were all messed with.

I used the be the way you were when i shot digital because i could do everything needed(for the most part) in-camera.
However, when i got more into 35mm, i realised that post-processing was in-evitable.
Really, you have to learn to change with the times and to respect people's work. Photoshopping really is an art in itself. It's like anything. Some people are horrible at it, and others are amazing at it.

So did you stop skiing when you realized some people had started using parabolic skis? Should people have stopped writing fiction when the word processor (or typewriter!) came into use? Did you stop caring about math when the teachers started letting your classmates use calculators?

I guess everyone should have to take pictures on the same kind of film too. Actually, if we take your implied logic to its conclusion, the invention of actual film ruined photography, since the real art was in Daguerrotype. Film allowed all sorts of trickery, improvements and cheating in the darkroom, while the cold judgement of the iodine vapours was what separated the real photographers from the scoundrels.

The only way I can make sense of your statement is to guess that you were only doing photography to impress people. When you realized you couldn't do what other people were doing without learning how to post-process your digital images, you gave up.

If you weren't such a quitter, and had a more honest reason for being put off by digital improvements, you could start some sort of counter-establishment Dogme 07 movement and put out manifestos about producing "honest," "real" photos. It's a shame you'll never give us your best Lars von Trier impression.

i usually try to do both at the same time. if there is a lot to see and its a large building, i might just take snapshots and worry about getting great photos for the next trip or on the way out. i cant NOT take pictures though.

i generally take pics while exploring, but you're right - it does take a huge chunk out of actual exploring time, setting up shots, etc. if i go somewhere, i tend to take the nicest shots i can the first time i go there, and focus just on the photography aspect. then, seeing as i usually visit places at least twice, i go on an all out explore the second time, but if i see something really awesome i'll grab a shot of it.

I usually explore first then comeback later for the pics. But when i explore i memorize where some great photo opps would be, so the next time isnt a waste of time.

Also, i just own a $200 "point and shoot" camera, so if i upgrade my camera, my style will probably change too.

"Hardcore Exploring" is running, climbing, crawling with... 20 pounds of camera equipment.

2 pelican cases, a backpack, a duffel, two tripods... oh yeah, and some flashlights.

I'm an explorer and not much of a photographer. I usually explore a site, only taking some photo's when I see something worthwhile.

i have found that while exploring, it can go one of either two way. sometimes, i really like to take my time and get lots of pictures, other times, i like to get as much exploring in as possible. taking pictures takes larges chunks out of exploring time. going on an all out exploring assault on the place generally makes me want to not stop for pictures. i have found that making seperate trips for the two is the best way to do it. anyone have any strategies that they use? strictly photos? strictly exploring?

Well That's really up to you, but there's no reason to be dogmatic about it. I've learned how to work quickly from exploring and photographing -- because you never know when you might be interrupted...or if you'll ever have the chance to go back there again. Some of my most fav shots were from working with this attitude and pressure, and I'm not about to say one is more important or requisite then the other.

Without one (sssploring), I wouldnt have the other (photos)...
