Permission to explore
< on 2/24/2007 12:17 AM >

I was just curious.

If you got permission to explore a site, is it still UE? Just wondered if the major thrill is the risk of getting caught or being where you aren't supposed to be.

Reason is I've been in some pretty cool places because either it's public domain or we are there looking at a job.

I had to walk a site that had at least 7 abandoned houses and scores of outbuildings, taking pics and noting any unusual construction methods, for a demolition bid. It was UE in the sense we know, and some of the houses were good UE material, but I didn't see any real thrill since it was a job assignment.

Thoughts?

I think it's "legal UE". Just another way to go about it. Sometimes that's the only way to see things that you wouldn't any other time, like active steel mills, which I am currently looking into doing. I will get in here...

i'm working on getting permission to go on a photo trip of the site in northern WV that got me into ue back in 79/80. it's an old county farm and mental facility that's been empty since the late 50's or early 60's.

the main building is really interesting and several of the buildings were connected by tunnels. there were greenhouses and admin buildings, cell blocks and a huge institutional oven in the admin wing basement. one wing of the basement is filled with wood frame beds and has a large steel mesh gate closing off that entire end. the adjoining cell row has a hallway along the back of the cells and very small windows. the entrance to thiscorridor was hidden but exposed when the central area was burned and collapsed.

this place was really cool to explore when i was a kid, we used to crawl through unstable ruins that i just shake my head to remember now. when the weather warms again i'm gonna fill up all my camera media.

Excellent!

There are some great sites here that are sealed up tight and alarmed, or carry prosecution if you are caught, but if you make up a story to a realtor or owner's agent, you can usually bribe your way in, legally.

knowing what to say and what to do is often all you need. the way you talk and conduct yourself. in the PI world it's known as pretexting. it's something i've done on many occasions to gain entry or to avoid hassles when noticed. some of the pretexts i've used have been photographer for a real estate firm, employee of a building inspection service, title company security surveyor, sometimes a hardhat and nice clothing can do wonders. just don't impersonate an employee of an existing company, or try to scam anyone too high up the chain of command. important people don't like to feel left out of things, or threatened by something they perceive as a threat.

i once screwed myself by pretexting the shop supervisor, who thought that the company was secretly assessing their assets in preparations of closing up and firing everybody. he didn't say anything to me, just went to management to raise hell. i got lucky that another employee got curious and tipped me off. needles to say i left the property just in time. always be careful when "engineering"

This thread is turning into an ethics conversation, methinks, so I'll put in my two cents.

If someone asks permission, they've got no chance of being arrested, which means more fun can be had. Some people do get the rush of being found out and having to sprint, but that's not my bag of goodies. I prefer to do things laid back so I can see the sights and enjoy myself.

And besides, if you're legal about it, you build a good reputation with the local cops in case you happen to need a reference for another site.

Take off every 'Sig'. For great justice.

More than one way to skin a cat. Cops many times know a lot of history about a site and other juicy sites as well including contact names.

If you get permission to explore a site, of course it's still UE. It's simply UE done with "social engineering." For example, consider there's this really cool building that's been abandon for at least some years or more, like a school, or a hotel, or an old factory, but the site is still owned and kept with 24 hour security. You want to explore it but don't want to risk going to jail...so you find said people that own it and concoct a story you think they'll like that will get you in, and if you're lucky you don't even have to come up with the story part, you just flat out tell them you'd like to take some pictures, but unfortunately that doesn't usually fly...so you come up with a stroy. That is UE with social engineering.

Who gets to decide?
This is like Billy Clinton's discussion of what makes "sex" sex.

Maybe . . . But I dunno really.
But a bigger question remains: "Is a blowjob UE?"
Is UE a verb now??
As in "I'd UE the shit out of that place . . . if I had some balls and the ambition to get out of bed before noon!!!"
