| | | Posted by Panic! Okay I've been toying with the idea of asking for donations for my web site for quite some time. But I have been in two minds about it. Because while it is a rather large site (just about a GB of stuff and probably the second largest UE web site online) I have always figured well if I put it online then I should expect to pay for the costs involved. Only the costs involved will soon get rather expensive. Unlike many people who are into UE who can drive, ride or even walk to a plethora of UE sites I live in a bit of a UE desert. Canberra is a hole. It sucks any local good UE sites into the hole, chews them up and spits out housing developments. So to see good stuff I have to normally drive for a few hours. Or get on a plane. Which is why later on this year I am planning to travel to Europe and AmeriCanadia ala http://www.urbanadventure.org/main/rtex/ It'll be expensive. Very expensive. Oh, yeah, it's not hosting costs. But it is costs. This will result in lots of new pictures and video and even a bit of text on to my site. Which in turn will entertain people. So, is it reasonable to ask for donations for entertainment? I was thinking of offering something tangible in return. Such as making the images / video / etc of the trip only accessible to people who have donated. Or perhaps have people sponsor the Chernobyl trip section and have that accessible only to hose who have donated. Clearly I'm indecisive and undecided on this as I'm interested in community opinion and input. Having just explained why I don't donate to UER in another thread I am concious that it makes me look a bit hypocritical writing about donations in this thread. So feel free to not point that out to me or turn this into a shitfight because I'm not interested in arguing over carp like that. My question is, what do people think about making donations towards my trip and only providing access to the products of that trip to donators?

| | | I think you should be able to ask donations for any cause you want. But, I don't think you're going to get any unless it's a cause people care about and want to donate to. Does Panic have a large membership that might be willing to fund his worldwide trips? Maybe. Am I one of those members? No. I feel that in order for donations to be successful, you have to have an exchange in value. People value UER, both as a resource and as a place for them to connect and express themselves and to find a home, which is why they donate. Are Panic's potential donors getting an exchange in value? That's up to them to decide. -av

Exactly, and what value is there in funding a stranger's vacation? It's a great scam if you can pull it off. Good luck Panic! [last edit 3/10/2007 1:12 AM by KONG - edited 1 times]

Yeah. If you've explored with Av once, you'd realize that it may be a better idea to pay him to stay home.

| | | Up until this thread I had never heard of or visited urbanadventure.org. Asking for donations is OK (preferably on your own site though, otherwise buy some ad space from Av). Part of the reason (or the reason) that people donate to UER is that it's veering towards something that a company might buy (ie: Google UE or Yahoo! UE). When you get a site that universal, you don't have to ask for donations. I run a pile of sites but since I started them up on my own accord, I can't really whine that my users should pay me for my efforts (though if they do donate, that's a super bonus).

I meant that UER has become so universal and ubiquitous, Google could buy it and turn it into Google UE and charge if they wanted to. In other words, Av gets donations without having to ask for them.

| | | I don't have anything against Panic, or his site. My comparing him to lord dick wasn't fair or kind of me to do. It was a joking jab, but too much so. I just found it strange that he would ask such a question, but after sending Panic a PM, his reasoning makes more sens to me now. Most people and small organizations who want do real in-depth exploration and documentaries need lots of cash to do so. Most get this from personal funds or outside sources. Some market their produces to the media for funding, or even business. If you could make your living doing this, that would be great. You must enjoy your work to be happy; people should try to do what they are best at, and not worry about the money. In time, it will come (except for lord dick). You could try your hand as an independent producer. Either selling the finish product or submitting a plan to do it to investors. Choose a project that the media or select groups/individuals have interest in. Develop a business plan for that project and submit it to them in order to get funding. Easier said then done, but having a sense a business savvy is a real skill worth developing. It's not who you are, it's who you know Peace.
May you find your dreams, and a way.
