What U hate on this thread (photogrpahy wise)
< on 1/25/2007 9:24 PM >

Following the posts here for a few days, I've realized that maybe we should discuss what we hate around here without directly flamming someone.

So here's what I hate:

- Bad composition (take it as you wish, if you cant pull off a cool angle, stick to keeping it str8).
- Terrible HDR with super halos (it means your shots not lined up -- dont bother then)
- Terrible Photomatix (if u cannot do something in photoshop, dont bother using photomatix if u wont desaturate it and fixed color casts)
- Abuse of shadow/highlights function
- Abuse of shitty PS effects
- Using naked girls in abandonments
- Ugly, oversized animated watermarks
- Watermakrs in general which are obtrusive
- IR filter shots which suck, better yet using filers to compensate for other bad photo critieria.
- animated gifs
- soft focus (it doesnt work with architecture, mmkay?!)
- double exposures utalizing any of the above mentioned criteria.
- high digital ISO
- thick borders
- cell phone camera shots

These include almost everything I've brought up here:

Why exactly should we discuss what we hate? To what ultimate end? And besides, you didn't include naked women in your postings. I'm very disappointed.

There is alot of dissing going on, both good and bad natured around here and discussing what we don't like I think would be useful for those who lurk here and don't want to involve themselves.

Also Glass has established the 6 photo max rule and people are still posting LONG series.

As for naked chicks shots, I dont think that's allowed here, but I'm sure if you run a search string : naked + girl + HAWT + crusty + abandonment + UE on flickr you'll end up with some results pronto.

I believe he made this suggestion for the photo critique section, not the photo section.

Also didn't we just have a thread with a poll about what people didn't like, why go through this again?

I think Nan is talking about my thread called, "Most over done photographed subject." Which had some people talk about what they disliked but wasn't really the point of the thread, it was more to discuss the monotomous of some of the subjects of current photographs. I think adding the link wouldn't really aide this discussion since its under a different pretense.

But I do think some of the resounding feelings of the posters might transfer over: Not everyone here posts photos for critiques, many post because of the new experiences that they encountered and want to share. A person doesn't post their photos for others, they do it for themselves. Photographers try different things and are always trying to learn, by posting they are trying to find what works and what doesn't. If a person dislikes a thread then stop looking, you don't have to look at everything. Try and be creative, do something new and it will stand out more.

Now all of these were basically points that were made in my post. I am not saying they are all true but they all have very valid points. Everyone is different and what one person likes will always be different from the next. I don't think because anyone dislikes something should really stop someone else from trying something new. If a person dislikes it they have really two choices: ignore or give constructive criticism if they think the poster was looking for it.

P.S. I don't mind the naked girl pictures.

We must always fear the wicked.
But there is another kind of evil that we must fear the most,
and that is the indifference of good men.

Too bad! Though, I'm not sure what of the above I misused in the process.

The vast majority of what you hate is so subjective that I still do not know what you hate and honestly, I don’t really care. This thread comes off so negative and elitist that it offends my delicate sensibilities.

I am familiar with the work of many of the people who have posted in this thread, for example, Nanguz, Yokes, Blend and Desmet, because they have posted pictures in the photography section, but I don’t recall you doing this (I could be wrong, if so lets see the link). Therefore, I suggest that instead of giving vague statements of what you hate you should post some of your super awesome photos so we can all learn how to do it right. Lead by positive example. I think I speak for many people when I say we are hungry to learn how to be super awesome.

Opinions are subjective argonian. Just like what you might think of me, and I of you. They stand alone, and they sure as hell don't resinate any louder when you corral all your friends together.

What I find the most interesting in everything that you said ....is how you state you don't care about my opinion but then say I have offended your delicate sensibilities.

You do care about my opinions!

I have posted my photos here on UER several times, although I'm not sure if I have posted them in photo critiques. I'll tell you why I didnt a while ago. The majority of what does on here is utter thrashing OR mutual self-admiration, or ego stroking amongst friends. Like all websites which have photo review sections, this is what goes on everywhere, its not unique to UER.

Sharing your opinions, and asking what people like, and dont like is a part of what you have a thread like this in the first place for. It's not elitist. Sure you CAN choose not to tell a person WHY you dont like their photos (perhaps to be nice)....but the person still wants feedback, and if u can be constructive about it I think your helping them by telling them - 'specially if they are asking.

None of I wrote was particular vague, I gave specifics as to what I didn't like, and I asked others to do the same (note list). Someone here said "If you dont like something, don't look at it". That's great advice, but if your asking for help u need to tell people the good and the bad, if need be.

Now -- as for me being "super awesome" that is not what I said at all so don't go misconstruing shit and trying to start an argument.

Here's what I think about myself: I do know what I am doing and have confidence in my work. I don't hide it (everyone is welcome to see it on flickr, and here where I have posted). When someone has something constructive to say I welcome it. If someone hates my stuff, my world wont come tumbling down. If you like it, great.

I WILL post a series here later on today when I find them. I fully expect, YOU to explain why you like or hate about the shot, and your friends are also welcome so we can ALL practice what we preach. You know, so were all on the same page.

yokes: give me a break. I've seen you trash people specifically as it relates to HDR. Your not innocent.

manitou: I havent seen anything by you at all on photo critque board. But I guess its ok for you to hate asylum shots. I like double standards.

I should have been specific. I meant in UER Photography or UER Photo Critiques. I don’t recall any of these threads. Maybe it was long, long ago.

Posted by Air 33

Sharing your opinions, and asking what people like, and dont like is a part of what you have a thread like this in the first place for.

You didn’t ask people what they like you were trying to start a thread of what people hate. Furthermore, this forum is typically used to critique specific photos. In which case it makes sense to say something such as “I think your borders are too large, try halving them and see what you think” instead of I don’t like thick borders without providing a reference point. That statement is so vague it is useless.

Posted by Air 33

Again, this is true when you are criticizing specific photos, not just listing a bunch of things you hate.

Posted by Air 33

People post their pictures and ask for them to be critiqued.

Your post was in a thread of your creation, not in a thread where someone posted pictures to be critiqued. This statement is completely irrelevant.

Using the border example, how is “thick borders” specific? You gave us no reference point. In my opinion thick is not in any way specific.

I believe that in order for it to have been a double standard I would have to lash out against the hallway shot, then go ahead and post my own series of hallway shots whilst pointing out that it is acceptable for me to post said shots for a particular reason. There are no double standards involved here.

It is ok for me to dislike shots that are cliche and trite, if every week there was another series of shots of the gear from the Brickworks I would dislike that too because of the abject absence of any creativity. I have nothing against a shot of a hallway, but a series of 20 photos in which half are hallway shots tells me that the photographer is simply not paying close enough attention to the building and it's features.

I have posted the occasional set in the photography forum, one of which can be found here.

I prefer not to post in the photography forum for the reasons which you outlined in one of your posts. There is far too much ego-stroking amongst friends, I also find posting excessive numbers of shots in the photography forum to be quite masturbatory, if one is experimenting with a new style, or has a set from a virgin location, then by all means post them for all to see, but if the set is the same as the last five or ten that you have posted then I see it as nothing more than begging for attention. I am comfortable with my photography, if I want opinions on it I have a group of friends and compatriots whose opinions I respect to turn to rather than post on here (I mean no denigration to any of the members of this site by this).

You shouldn't be if you don't care, that is a bizzare response.

Well, since a similar thread exists, and both you and I posted on it, I'll just say other dialogue isent discouraged around here.

Your post was in a thread of your creation, not in a thread where someone posted pictures to be critiqued. This statement is completely irrelevant.

Ok, if you think so. Its relevant to the thread. And nothing else.

Using the border example, how is “thick borders” specific? You gave us no reference point. In my opinion thick is not in any way specific.

its just a simple statement. A 1 inch border is totally uncalled for. And again, that's just an opinion. Don't get too bent out of shape about it.
