Did the parish leave yesterday? I just can't believe that place is abandoned, it looks like it could of had a ceremony that day. If you don't mind me asking, what country is this church located in? Its a beautiful place and your shots are nice. I hope your luck lasts and this place isn't ruined.

It's abandoned close to a year now. It's even unholied (?) meaning it's no longer a holy place. It will be converted pretty soon to a community-place where the city will have some of its employees. (Can you imagine working here?)

It's in Belgium and normally it is closed off pretty well. I just got lucky to slip in behind someone who had a key (they were filming a movie that day in there) I made as little noise as i could and spend there about 4 hours just enjoying the beauty before trying to slip out again. (the producer halted us though and asked if we had photos of the crew, which we didn't so we could go.. lol) More can be found at: http://www.wotsa.b.../Church/index.html

I have never actually heard of a place being unholied. I guess the idea makes sense but also seems kind of unnatural for a religion. I can't imagine working there, I think it would be kind of creepy or weird. Thanks for all the information, I love learning about the places people visit.

They designate places as "holy places" - it's sort of like a zoning regulation.
Unholied sort of means it has been rezoned from 'church' to 'whatever.'

@dewey379:
My pleasure. I'd love working here, but i guess i would get little done.

@dewey379 & DevilC:
I don't know about other religions but i do know that the catholic churches have a whole process to make them from a building to a holy place (it is not merely a designation). reversely there is a whole procedure to go through to unholy a church.. Off course if you were to, let's say, kill someone inside it would be unholied as well but under normal circumstances only a priest can unholy a church (or holy it for that matter).

Great photos and oportunity. My only church exploration was of a muslim mosque when I didn't have a camera. When I'll get a camera I'll try and go back but I'm sweating over that moment as the place is in a muslim majority area (the recent events at the ambaseyes involving muslim fanatics doesn't give the best feeling about going in that place though the window wich is the only place to get in and get out).
I wish I had nice abandoned catholic/orthodox churces in my area like you.

I have never been in a mosque. There are not a lot of them in Belgium so it would be interesting to see. But i well understand how difficult it can be to go to a place not your own religion, especially one that has some very active extremists. I'm glad the catholic church is passed that phase for the most part so i could go to such a church and feel safe doing so. Still i do hope to see the mosque of yours at some stage

I may be wrong here but I believe the process of making a building into a holy place (church) is called "Consecration". The process of making a holy place into a building or decommissioning a church is called "Deconsecration".

And if you kill someone inside a church or cause damage to it, "Desecration".

If I am wrong, sorry about that.

There is a gold thing that the priest holds up when he's doing the "this is my body eat of it" bla bla bla. It's got the "SPECIAL" bread in it, maybe from the vatican or something, but it's my understand that when that object is present JESUS is in the house, AKA it's a church.

I'm not that familiar with English but it sounds right. However as far as i know desecration also leads to a new consecration so in essence a kind of deconsecration has happened, although not by the priests themselves.

The special bread isn't made in the vatican. There are enough companies who make it. It gets turned into Jesus by the priest, but actually the burning candle of God might be a more physical sign if God is in the house than these bread-things.

Isn't that called taking "communion"?

That's done at most services. There is also wine involved and that represents the blood of Christ.

The following will make me look very... uncultured? BUT for the sake of factual information I'm posting an update on my "mosque" visit. It's actually a synagogue wich is currently being slowly demolished. I made the mistake to consider it a mosque because of it's location and because at the time I visited it I didn't have allot of time to explore it properly and no light available to see the big ass judah's lions and other things wich made it clear what it was the next time I went there before demo work on it started. Sadly I didn't have my tripod with me and allot of beautiful details from this building from 1911 will be lost.
(let's play "spot the synagogue"!):

Here are some more outside pictures of it (not mine):

Wow, it looks great from the outside. I'm glad you got in, before it was demolished. Such a shame to see it being destroyed, it looks very nice.

Yeah a tripod is usually necessary in religious buildings. I think they make them extra dark just to create more mystery.. anyway.. I'm glad you got in and got to enjoy it before it was gone.

That day the lights were on because the movie crew had brought in a generator to have some light in there.. so you're right and wrong.
