HDR attempt - tear me up!
< on 12/20/2006 1:16 AM >

So, this is one of my first attempts at an HDR. I used five long exposures and used the default settings in Photomatix except for turning the Strength to 100 (I like the surreal look). Other than that I haven't done anything to it.

Tear me up. Seriously. I know it's a not-so-hot picture and I'm not that whoopie about it. So, what could I do post- and pre-processing to improve this?

first of all, the stars around the lights are pissing the hell out of me. whatever happened to make those, do the opposite. and i would make the exposures a bit longer with greater differences in the exposure times.

but im really just expirementing with hdr right now too, so im not the most credible source of advice.

I like the starbursts myself.. it's neat-o!

BUT I like the HDR that is extreme color differences and such. I like blown out HDR color. I may be weird in that respect, but I don't like subtle HDR unless it's a really knock-out picture in itself, and if that's the case, there's sometimes no need for HDR anyway.
(Is this behind the wall?? I know it's not.. wishful thinking.. ^_^)

Can't go any longer with them. The highest one was already at 30", the limit of my camera. I could open the aperture up a bit to get more light, though.

I don't know what I could do about the starbursts, though. :/

hey fellow hdr noob! im very new to hdr myself. ill try to give as much quality input i can.

strengths: i like how the hdr is pretty subtle here. nobody likes the rainbow look lol. the composition is kind of nifty too. other than the grainy sky the colors are very nice.

weaknesses: like wgross, i do not think the stars around the lights are helping the picture. theyre kind of distracting and theyre so repetitive (the exact same for each light. also, rotate the pic a few degrees counterclockwise. finally u got orbs or ghosts or something floating all around the pic.

keep goin at it!

p.s: just curious but what exposures were each of the pics taken at?

I actually like that rainbow look, but I haven't been able to achieve it. How the hell are you guys getting that?

other than the grainy sky the colors are very nice.

That could be my fault. I think I might've left the ISO to auto.

i do not think the stars around the lights are helping the picture. theyre kind of distracting and theyre so repetitive (the exact same for each light.

Yeah, I agree. But how do you avoid that?

finally u got orbs or ghosts or something floating all around the pic.

Yeah, and how exactly does that even happen without a flash? If I knew how it happened, I could avoid it.

p.s: just curious but what exposures were each of the pics taken at?

30", 20", 10", 5", 3".... I think

I like; people pay good money for those star burst effect filters! Cool look.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

I think it's a very good first attempt. Try taking the image that Photomatix outputs, and bring it into Photoshop for more tweaking. Try pushing the star burst further. Some people say they don't like em, but try going a different way and enhancing them. You did a very good job of not over doing the adjustments in Photomatix. Take a look at my HDR gallery for some adjustment ideas.

What do you mean by enhancing the starburst? I don't really know how I got them in the first place Just seems to happen when I do long exposures with lights.

Teach me, Obi Wan. Because I've been playing around with making HDR photos from around the house and yard, and I can't get anything that even comes close to what you've got on your site. (Your site's layout is spiffy, by the way).

Your HDRs are wayyyy more colorful. Is that something you're doing in Photoshop, or am I just fucking up the white balance when I take the pictures?

I can't even get my damn HDRs to come out as sharp as yours are, even though I'm using a tripod and being extra-careful.

Those starbursts are badass. Other than that, I'm not good at hdr'ing, so I won't comment.

To get rid of the starbursts:
Use a larger aperture. You probably used like f/22 or something? Yeah, use something larger, like f/11 or even larger than that.

Erm... it was 8.0 and that's as high as my camera goes.

not really sure why this even need to be in HDR. its not a contrasty scene so i dont see what youre gaining by blending. maybe the litup parking deck lights at most.

Well, it doesn't really. However, the two stairwells on the parking garage do get totally blown out if you try to expose the tower correctly.

Really, I just like HDRs. (I know, the horror!) I like the surreal look of the photos.

But I can't seem to get that surreal look

I could still open the aperture more, though. I was just surprised, because my camera doesn't go nearly as high as yours apparently

Ahhhh you got it backwards.
Larger aperture=smaller numbers. Yes, by all means open that aperture up.

Oh, and I have the exact opposite problem with HDR's. I always get the surreal, computer generated look, instead of the normal look and I cant figure out how to get it to look any different.

Maybe... I don't think I do, though. f8.0 is smaller than f2, right? So, f22 or f11 would be way smaller than f8.0 right? If so, my camera only goes as small as f8.0.

Either that or I'm confused about something. But I thought bigger number = smaller aperture/bigger DOF.

Yeah, youre right. I said use a larger aperture to get rid of the star effect. Something like f/5.6 or something. f/22 was just an example because a small aperture such as that would yeild that effect.
Also, you may not be getting that surreal look because there simply is just not that much dynamic range in that photo. Try shooting something with a lot more dynamic range (like 3 or 4 stops difference).

point and shoots typically only close down to f8 or so because smaller sensors are much more degraded by diffraction.
