| | Advise for abandoned oil refinery? < on 9/22/2006 5:48 PM >
| | | A two hours drive from my city lies an oil refinery thats been abandoned for over 26 years I estimate. I am going to put it this way: Once upon a time there was what was by far the greatest oil refinery in the Caribbean. It employed thousands. One fine day, by the early 1980s, it shut down. And to this day its there. My parents would tell me about the regional debacle that took place there when the refinery shut down, even of the people who committed suicide when they lost their jobs. Its got smokestacks, massive containers, entire roads and 3 to 4 story office buildings, not to mention all the pipes and it includes a full harbor, which was used to service the ships going towards the refinery (The harbor encompasses a significant portion of the bay). Its a city of its own. Its gotta be at least twenty acres. When you drive on the highway that is next to it, you take at least fifteen minutes to drive past all of it. And there's even more that is unseen from outside because its slightly hilly terrain. Its my personal holy grail. And I am calculating it should be easy to get into. There hasn't been any security in like two decades, and all its got is a few gates with padlocks and chains. I could even drive in through one of its numerous service roads and park the car behind one of the hills so nobody sees from the highway. Here's the catch for which I am posting. The place is the single most contaminated area in my country. The only reason its still standing there, for which they haven't demolished it and used the land for something else is because the work required to clean the place is so massive the government hasn't got the money. In fact, the place is in the EPA constant watchlist. The tanks still have chemicals inside and in fact, there are rumors of leaks in them. Its the ultimate ecological nightmare. Aside from my common sense, what are the ideas on safety in that place?

| | | Limited exposure should help to keep you safe. You are only going to be there long enough to shoot photos, not making a career of it. Get a good respirator, good gloves, and shoes you can throw away. Go and do you exploration, and just excercise a little caution. Don't walk through puddles of misc. stuff. Don't touch things with your bare hands and then smoke cigarettes, for example. Tanks full of chemicals don't matter to you, because you won't be going in them. Avoid lingering in confined spaces where there are very strong chemical smells. None of these guarantee your safety, but if you take basic steps to protect yourself from the worst of it, you should be fine.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | A holy grail with a cruel ironic twist. I'd imagine you could do a lot there without even going underground, which would go a long way toward your safety. I'm sure the higher spots -- rooftops and catwalks and all that -- are a huge part of the attraction anyway, and they'd be way less hazardous chemically speaking than the confined tunnels and basements. If you do go underground, the only thing I'd add to what was suggested above would be some sort of eye-protection, preferably goggles. Not smoking around fumes is a good plan too!
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

| | | holy shit im jealous. if i were you, I'd honestly probably go in with just a respirator. but you should get a good respirator that protects against petrochemicals, get some good, thick, rubber gloves, get some rubber boots too, or something you can throw away. dont go in too long. im sure you'll have a blast. i wouldnt suggest removing your mask for anything, though.

Also if you go to that place with any of the suits officeninja suggested you could definitely act like you are suppose to be there and inform any security that they are in danger by being there.

| | | Ahh... good old social engineering. In any case, I have a white hard hat sitting around which I would bring even if its just to look credible, park the car somewhere not visible (A 1980 Datsun doesn't exactly fit into it all). . I will post the pics of the place. I am making plans for October. I am gonna try to go with my cousin. I'll go into drains alone any day. But I would like for her to be able to dial 911 if I fall through two stories of decaying floors into a pool of sulfur. ;) BTW, remember I said it was at least twenty acres? I decided to read around, and found the exact size of the place. 800 acres. (insert mind blowing orgasm) The question I've been pondering: When I go in, should I just be delicate and pick the lock on the gates, or smash the lock and put a new one when I go out? (Its a chain with a padlock tying them) [last edit 9/22/2006 10:18 PM by yoviher - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm drool'in. Make sur there isn't an active refinery, or any other 911 "hotspot" next to it. Wear glasses or safety glasses, boots, and bring a least 2 quarts of water. They're may be sulfuric, or other acids and caustics there. Be careful where you put your hands, don't smoke, and be very careful on what you walk. Assume nothing! Catwalks that seem solid can disappear from under you. Uncovered manholes filled with nasties may be anywhere. Refineries are some of the most dangerous places on earth, and old ones can be worse. NEVER enter tanks for any reason. NEVER open valves on gas cylinders, or anything. That said the hazards are minimum if you don't do anything stupid. It won't do you permanent harm to breath the air there for a couple of hours as long as your not in a confined space, or opening shit you shouldn't. It's prolly bone dry, but never assume that! Enjoy your new playground, you lucky bastard!

Actually, there's *drumroll please*... another abandoned refinery next to it. Albeit a much smaller one. Nothing as grandiose. Understand that in the 1960s and 1970s Puerto Rico was the land of oil refineries. We had more refineries in this 111 x 39 mile island than in the entire North American eastern seaboard. By the early 1980s the bottom fell from it all and nearly all of them shut down, leaving their rotting carcasses behind for the only urban explorer in Puerto Rico (me).

| | | Personally I'd bring a friend at least if yer worried about passin out from fumes you can at least keep an eye on each other and if anything does happen at least you get help instantly.. I'd also let someone know where yer goin and when you plan on being back, and if you blow the eta call'em and let'em know yer still alive so they don't call you an ambulance.. Other then that gage what chemicals you'll run across and get the protective gear according to that, be it gas mask, P100, waders.....

Just climb the fence.. unless the locks on a daisy chain.. then you could likely add your own lock without much of notice depending on how many locks are on there..

Yeah avoid breaking stuff. Many times there will be easy ways in made by nature, or others. Try near the docks, or scale the fence at one of the gates if need be. Be careful with each step you take once inside; don't get hurt!
