i will keep it off topic and just from some workday discussions with maze i can vouch she is one of the hardest people i know. When you joke about backbenchers they too are quite busy, they often do a lot of the legwork for the party. It looks like a cushy job but i would not want to be a politician.

yep I've always believed that backbenchers have been unfairly given a bad reputation. I'm sure there are plenty of hard working people in parliament, though Maze, you have to admit the Senate system is a joke. That being said I'm sure there are some Senators who actually work hard and try to make a difference. They just get a bad reputation cause of the ones who take advantage of the position.
Oh and I took a sick day this today. For a second I felt like a union employee then I remembered I hadn't called sick for 4 months and probably won't again for another 4 months.

I know this is off topic but I feel personally concerned with these allegations. That's absolutely not the case in Parliament. I know very well most of the people on the Hill and I know none that were hired cause they are connected to someone.

Furthermore, we are no rotters, leeches and freeloaders. We're crazy people that work all day, all night and on week-ends, are willing to have no personal life in order to serve the MPs, Senators and other, are willing to accept to work for people that have egos the size of a planet, think they are the center of the universe and sometimes loose the notion of what common sense is.

But trust me - no gimmicks, no "rings", no "people,s salaries get kicked back to a manager", absolutely nothing like that.

I invite you to perhaps spend a day with me in Parliament, especially when the House is sitting and you'll see that we don't sit there playing Minesweeper all day. We usually starts at 8am and leave around 7pm and that when the House is not sitting until 10pm. We're not paid by the hour so all this time is on us.

Oh, and we also take phone calls from constituents, even the crazy ones that calls us stuff like (my personal top 5) : "Bitch", "Frenchy", "corrupted", "Sex-a-tery" (like secretary but the Lewinsky version) and "whore".

Accusing Political staff of being corrupted, lazy and all the other clichés is nice but it couldn't be farter from the truth.

Now, let's get back on topic.

I think what he meant was, the people you work for. You most certainly cannot say that dodgy dealings are not, and have not been common practice for the people u do support work for. Need I bring up examples such as the sponsorship scandal?

I always wondered who did the work of politician assholes. They sit on so many committees, have varied portfolios (in some cases which they have no background in), and I always wondered how many invisible people keep that 'ship from sinking'.

The very fact that senators are not elected (the same way MPP's are), just brings about feelings of great cynicism for me. Also, every once in awhile you get someone who doesn't happen to be a trust fund baby there, but seriously.....

Sorry to keep off topic but...

If we elected a Senate, it would basically end up being The House of Commons 2. Just as much BS and raucous behavior as in the House.

Understandably, the process of appointing a Senator stinks of partisanship, however, the people that are generally appointed have distinguished themselves in some way (career, public service, military, etc...) and perhaps do merit the appointment.

Finally, it's too bad we don't get to see more of the work being done in the Senate because on many occasions, the people there actually engage in debates instead of jockeying for sound-bites
