SuperGege Power!!!!!

Wow! Those were damn good salaries for the time. If you figure $20 per hour, for a 2000 hours/year, that works out to about $40,000 gross per year. My mom worked as a clerk for the government, and she made less than 1/4 of that.

Yep. I really don't understand the opposition that so many people have to unions these days--especially when it concerns young people. If it weren't for unions, their parents wouldn't have done as well as they did. Decent wages and working conditions weren't a gift from employers--people had to fight damn hard to get them, and in the early days, that meant fighting government/police as well as employers. People just seem to have forgotten their history.

People seem to have bought into this neo-conservative agenda--wages are stagnant--at best, if not dropping. It used to take one salary to make ends meet now people can barely manage with two. Corporate profits certainly aren't falling, nor are CEO salaries and perks. You know, it's almost like we've gone back to the Dirty Thirties, when McKenzie King was more worried about the value of the dollar, and the effect on 'the bondholders.' Today, it's all about 'shareholder value.' McKenzie King could have eased the suffering of millions, but was afraid that the bond-holders would lose money if he did so. Plus ca change....

my neighbor ran a marche bonichoix(or somthing like that). this is not a huge 'grande surface' a small grocery store with 2 checkouts. His employees went union. Within 6 months he closed his doors, not because he wanted but because of union staffing requirements, the new wages etc.

I worked in a union place once. In IT you are expected to think up solutions to problems, Any suggestions i made were met with 'its always done this way dont change it, and why would you want to work hard for your raise if everyone gets the same raise anyways'

removed for security reasons nostra

Aye!

exactly, unions do some good things like get good pay and vacation time for their employees but other than that it just encourages all the rotters and leeches. They would have to give me some pretty fucking good benefits to take my mind off of the kind of abuses that went on so I wouldn't go insane. Its bad enough in the private sector as it is.

I have to agree. People with no skills what so-ever (which makes them expendable) got paid more then I did in a hospital (by almost $5 an hour as orderlies and custodians and I was considered an educated/skilled/specialized researcher) and I neither had job security, good pay or benefits.

The majority of these individuals had been recruited eons ago, never learned English properly and had pensions and full health coverage.

While unions provide great opportunities for employees not to be abused and expendable in the workplace, they also do breed laziness and complacency between its members. When a person cannot get fired for being a complete incompetent, how good can everyone else be?

And the rotters, leeches, and freeloaders all bring equally lazy people with them so it becomes a self-selective nightmare. Many people take their kids, friends and some departments are run like 'rings' where a percentage of people's salaries get kicked back to a manager (all under the table, and all illegally--for being hired in the first place).

The health system is a great example of unions gone wrong. And I DO NOT buy the BS that paying unskilled labor this much is necessary because no body wanted these jobs, there is no reason to pay a janitor $25 an hour, people would do it for $10. You want to know how much a social worker makes??...$29 an hour, and MRI tech $21 ....a research administrator...$15.

That's fucked.

My apologies for the further derailment.

i have to agree, and people that get elected as 'shop steward' and the like that lurk in thos creepy union offices in places do nothing all day while being paid by the company. the company shouldnt have to pay someone who works against them at every step, they should be paid out of the unions funds. The company even has to provide office space for the unions. where i used to work the union offices always ended up looking like hell before long. Holes in the walls crap everywhere. Im sure they dont do that at home!

Hmm, all the union people at the hospital had (at least what I knew of was several bulletin boards) and their stupid internal job boards which no one else was welcome to *sigh*

or, if you're gonna pay a janitor 25$ an hour you better make sure he's a fucking good janitor. In order to make unions work well they should use the benefits as an excuse to have a higher standard. Only the best. Instead its only those who are in the little clique who get in and as mentioned in a previous post thats just a breeding ground for lazy, incompetent human waste.
I'm all for good labour laws and treating workers properly. Why not have the government legislate some decent vacation laws in this country? oh wait, then unions would lose a little bit of their reason to exist.
Ever read Last Exit to Brooklyn? There's a good little story about a union guy during a strike.

I agree with Blawkowski but cant resist pointing out that this reminds me of Parliament and the National Assembly.

I know this is off topic but I feel personally concerned with these allegations. That's absolutely not the case in Parliament. I know very well most of the people on the Hill and I know none that were hired cause they are connected to someone.

Furthermore, we are no rotters, leeches and freeloaders. We're crazy people that work all day, all night and on week-ends, are willing to have no personal life in order to serve the MPs, Senators and other, are willing to accept to work for people that have egos the size of a planet, think they are the center of the universe and sometimes loose the notion of what common sense is.

But trust me - no gimmicks, no "rings", no "people,s salaries get kicked back to a manager", absolutely nothing like that.

I invite you to perhaps spend a day with me in Parliament, especially when the House is sitting and you'll see that we don't sit there playing Minesweeper all day. We usually starts at 8am and leave around 7pm and that when the House is not sitting until 10pm. We're not paid by the hour so all this time is on us.

Oh, and we also take phone calls from constituents, even the crazy ones that calls us stuff like (my personal top 5) : "Bitch", "Frenchy", "corrupted", "Sex-a-tery" (like secretary but the Lewinsky version) and "whore".

Accusing Political staff of being corrupted, lazy and all the other clichés is nice but it couldn't be farter from the truth.

Now, let's get back on topic.
