I went to Easton State Steel yesterday and took a variety of pictures. I started playing around with exposure length and combining exposures/tone mapping here are some of the shots that I took. Some are HDR and some are standard.

(Note: Some of these pictures are HDR, if you don't like HDR, don't comment upon how you don't like it, critique the other pictures. I don't want this to turn into a HDR/Anti-HDR thread, I'd really like critique, thanks!)

Pretty good composition in a few of them, but the majority seem a little soft/out of focus.

Watch out for lens flare too when you're shooting towards the sun like in #2.

1, 2, and 5 seem quite flat.

I like the 3rd (HDR?)

aside from the softness/misfocus, these are lacking in composition and immediate subject. each of these make me think snapshot.

keep shooting!

yea, what he said.

And ...

1. like the subject, but would crop out the bright first window.

2. "common viewing height" shots are rarely interesting. Even crouching can change a shot, and make it more dramatic. Don't like the sun bleed from the left.

3. Nice, I like the colours. Lots to look at without any one part getting too much attention, except perhaps that yellow thing on the chair, but I still like it.

4. focus? Don't quite know what seems wrong somewhere.

5. see #2, amend 'left' to 'back'.

6. *cough*. I like the framing and subject etc. Would be nice to get this shot through bracketing and layering or some other method. The green seems forced too much in this one.

7. Don't know if I like the blur around the light. Love the rafter shots though!

8. too much grass, not enough building. focus or something is seriously screwy with this one. Perhaps _I_ had too much grass?

Nice start, keep shooting, and look with your 'camera-eye'.

My new camera is on the way, this camera has everything a little bit off.

Good call, I don't know how I missed that when taking the shot

That's the original, no adjustments.

I moved over as far as I could without impaling myself... completely agree though.

5. see #2, amend 'left' to 'back'.

Yeah, I tried everything I could to not let that light blast through but when I adjusted the exposure time it just darkened the foreground and the camera I've got doesn't let me adjust the aperature. :-/

This one was interesting to adjust. The grass was moving ever so slightly in the breeze and what you get is a picture that is just hard to look at. I loved the sky a ton though.

Care to elaborate at all? Or see *

Thanks a ton for all of the feedback! I really appreciate the constructive criticism.

Number 6, slightly over done for HDR, the background down at the end of the building is a bit over done / processed, the image is other wise fairly good.
The roof image need better attention to angles and framing.
The last one looks like crap. Too much green, not enough building. HDR makes this shot even worse.

The colors and light in number 3 are awesome. I'm guessing that this is a longer exposure? I like 1 and 2, and the main suggestion I would offer would be to move in closer, to cut out as much of the surrounding area as possible. That would make them different shots entirely, though, more abstract. You might be able to get the same sort of effect through cropping.

What is hdr? It works beautifully in number 6. The colors give it a graffiti appearance. I don't know if that is what you were going for, but I really like it.

Imo none of these look like snapshots. Especially considering that some of them were taken with longer exposures.. that alone proves that they weren't simply "snapped." It's evident that you have an eye for composition, but in some instances, some people would make different composition choices. It's always going to be like that. For instance, the last one seems to have too much green, but if your intent was to make the building appear shrouded in the leaves and grass/taken over by nature, this is one way to do it, and it works.

#3 was in a darker part of the building so I used "night mode" on my camera, which gives it a longer exposure time. I'd love to do that with some of the others but the light was just too strong, I'm hoping with a new camera and UV& Polarizing filters I'll be able to deal with a good amount of what is being mentioned.

I like it too, I like that it has its own glow. Its definitely a digital manipulation, but one that I'd like to get better at. I like it for a first try. Now I know to keep anything that can move (like grass and weeds) out of the pictures. For HDR I'll send you to what I guess has become the definitive HDR thread:

I like the effect. Can we split the difference and do 'Levels' on the pic? Call her even?
