I like how you've achieved almost an oil painting look.
It definitely makes these interesting scenes stand out even more.

Huh, I really hadn't seen much HDR before this. I'm not sure that I like the unnatural oil painting look of it. It takes away the relative brightness of things in the scene. I understand with the contrast ratios of current monitors that you can't show things at their actual relative brightness, but I don't like how it puts everything at the same level. I mean the sky should look brighter than the inside of the building but with HDR it seems to just make the luminance all exactly the same. I think I like bracket and blend better than this...it's not as effective but it looks a lot more natural.

I love the composition of these photos though, and for these particular subjects I don't mind the HDR as a creative tool. The only one that doesn't work for me is the first (outside is just too dark) but the rest are cool. I think the HDR look works the best with the 2nd and 4th.

These are the first HDR images I've seen that don't look terrible, in fact these look damn good.
I keep wanting to comment that number 1 and 4 look too low contrast, but then that's not the point of HDR images.
Even so, all photos need something white and something black in them so they don't look like they were shot through a foggy lens (kind of like your first image there). But in number 2 and 5 you've got black shadows and some white highlights, it gives them the contrast of an engaging photo, but also that unreal depth of HDR.

Number 4 is so close to being perfect, you just need something there that's black, otherwise it looks too HDR'y, if you get what I mean.

Excellent thread, and pics! Thanks for teaching me new tricks! Increased dynamic range is good.

If your shooting RAW images is one image enough to use HDR effectively? Do RAW images capture enough of the total dynamic range if the one shot RAW exposure setting is properly "centered"?

one raw image can work , but you have to remove the exif data (for example by choosing save for the web) else it won't work because most HDR programs look at the exif information, but still i think at least 3 different exposures is better

From what I found it's bes to take several images, using a cable release would be the best for LOW movement. And leave the shutter open for longer and longer times. I've yet to try this but these do look so far the best I've seen.

Thanks for posting this.

This thread has inspired me to go through some of the bracket and bled shots I've taken and try them in the CS2 HDR merger thing. I have some interesting results that don't have the oil painting look at all. Very interesting...and way easier than manual bracket and blend. Something to look in to...

You mean convert the RAW to a Tiff or Jpeg. In CS2 can you use the DNG as the source instead of Jpegs?

I don't know , all i know is that the HDR function in PS looks at the exif, so best is to convert it to jpegs with multiple exposures from RAW and loose the exif information...

Very refreshing. They look almost surreal at some points (like a 3d render).
What camera did you use?
