Wha? I don't think he ever did that. He did set fire to a national forest once, though. I'd say that was probably his lowest moment. And, man_in_black, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy is awesome.

| | | Johnny cash is the shit. Simple as that. Every song he wrote, was beautiful, of course i do have my favorites, but I really can't talk shit about anythign he wrote. Or even anything he covered. Alot of people don't realize that alot of his best known songs were not written by him. For instance "ring of fire" was written by his second wife June Carter (who was a horible singer). and as for "I've been everywhere"... a song he definately made famous was written, performed and recorded originally by country legend Hank Snow, who was known more for his love songs, but JR took the song and made it his own. Hurt was mention earlier, and that happened to be a Nine inch Nails song, he's also covered the depeche mode, and many other bands that you wouldn't think of, and I am currently drawing a blank on. here's another interesting fact: johnny cash's middle name is "R". When he was born his parents couldn't decide on a name, so they named him J.R. Cash, with no middle name. When he joined the military, they wouldn't accept that name, so he had to change it to john R cash. the R never stood for anything.

| | | Meh. He also put out about two and a half decade's worth of unlistenable schmaltz; something that most people tend to forget because they're too busy lionizing him as some sort of genius. Let's face it, the guy was barely treading water for a long, long time. If he's remembered as anything more than just "that guy who sang Ring of Fire" by younger people today, it's because Rick Rubin stepped in, got rid of all the shitty production values and told him what songs to sing.

Rick Rubin was still a pretty radical departure from what he had been doing. Stepping aside and letting someone else take charge of your music still takes some guts, and knowing when to step aside probably helps too. [edit spelling] [last edit 7/12/2006 5:01 AM by CaptOrbit - edited 1 times]

| | | Cash, in his early days, was more of a rockabilly musician than a country-western musician. I think he kind of transcends musical types - he experimented with a lot of different things to develop his own sound. Interesting way to get back to his roots. But was he really UE'ing or did he own the property? And I think Folsom Prison is still active - so it would be difficult as hell to get into (without committing a felony, of course). | | | johnny cash is one of america's greatest songwriters, no doubt. almost every song he wrote is famous. one of my favorites is "desperado", a cover of the eagles song. its almost like it was written for johnny cash's voice. i love him. almost to the point of necrophilia.

Bull Shit! He just walked right in, he was Johnny Cash. Quite the Chuck Norris of his day. Footage from that show was used for the 2003 video of the Cash song "Hurt", if you haven't seen it you should really check it out. It is one of the best music video's I've ever seen, in any genre.

| | | Posted by The_Man_in_Black In any event, in between stories on the show (or "Acts", as they are referred to by the host), they usually play a short musical bump. In one episode they played a song called "I see a darkness". Hearing it, I thought to myself "Self, that sounds like a Johnny Cash song that someone did a cover of". (And, I agreed with myself. Sharp guy, that Self.) Come to find out - the song was written and recorded by a man named Will Oldham, using the stage name of Bonnie Prince Billy. It was a very dark, sad song, and it sounded like it was definitely a Cash cover.. and then I found out that in fact, Will wrote it, and Cash loved it so much, he covered it on his American III album.
|
Man, I'll never forget the first time I heard that song and how happy I was to hear Will Oldham in the chorus. And I'll never forget the time I saw Will Oldham leaving (W)Rec(k?) Beach in Vancouver...
