|  | | | I was just wondering what it costs roughly to maintain a website/forum like this one. And no Im not running off to start my own UE site  The only sites I have had were very small and cost me about $5 a month. Im sure the prices are considerably higher with all this photo storage, bandwith, etc. I just want to know if I am doing my part and pulling my weight. As long as Im still using this site daily and finding useful information, Id be more comfortable to know if Im giving enough. And dont get excited, Im not a millionaire either, lol!

I pay for the server out of my own pocket -- some months, the donations cover it. But not every month. I always pay the slack and any additional fees.

For people to honestly know how much money came in. I know I had far more than enough people tell me they thought UER was making money while crying poor. That would alleviate such musings. If there was a public list, it would have to be right, since if it wasn't people would be complaining "Hey I donated $20 why isn't it counted"...

But WHY do people need to know how much other people donated? WHO CARES?
So what if Av made an extra 5, 10, 20 or 50 bucks over what it cost for hosting? I guarantee if he were to tabulate all the hours he puts into this site divided by any sort of surplus, perhaps he would have made a buck or less an hour.
Donating is a way of showing appreciation; if you're concerned about how much comes in, you really need to reassess your thoughts on this.
Sending him a few extra bucks is like buying the guy a beer or a sandwich. It's a way to say thanks.
I see no reason for Av to share that with people for many reasons... a big one is to prevent pissing matches. Another is so the largest donors don't start thinking they deserve special treatment for donating so much.
It's a donation. Donation implies CHARITY.

Same as when people donated to replace my stolen camera, and I asked to find out who every single person that donated was, so I could thank each person individually, but the request was ignored, repeatedly. I didn't even ask how much people had donated, just wanted to be able to thank everyone...

It's actually quite funny that Jester would cry foul about the donations, since he himself received $300 in donations from the UER community after OPEX '94.
