Any chance of getting a local copy of the locations DB for people with low bandwidth?

If suitable funds were sent, would it be possible to purchase a CD / DVD of the location DB? I have dial up but would love to look at more locations.

Sorry, UER does not have distribution rights for the content in the LDB. Even if we did, such a copy would be out of date within minutes.

This is 2006, bandwidth is cheap and internet is too. Get with the times!

He could be like me...out in the country...where any sort of high speed internet access isn't possible.

Offering copies of the Location Database would be a dangerous erosion of a user's control of the content they add to it (already a pretty murky and undependable thing). It always amazes me when people make suggestions like this that show a complete failure to consider how it might affect anything other than their own idiosyncratic wants.

I'm guessing that if Av did decide to make a build of it available on CD/DVD-R, we would see a worse flap and exodus than when the thing went full-member-only.

Ah, kowalski. Always on the offensive.

Panic's question was perfectly valid. This may come as a surprise to you, but some people believe that information should be freely available and that things like copyright and licensing are idiotic. I can see the logic in this argument but at the same time I also believe that the rights of the contributors on UER should be protected.

Perhaps next time you post, you can do it without the insulting undertones.

Kowalski's assessment of the situation sounded pretty damn acurate...

You know, maybe not a full local copy, but maybe an simple copy that has basic information like the name, where it is, one picture, and history on it?

Accurate or not, the undertones were pretty damn insulting.

You know, maybe not a full local copy, but maybe an simple copy that has basic information like the name, where it is, one picture, and history on it?

There are two issues here: The first is a user's control of their contributed content, and the fact that this has been a recognized right -- if not always respected -- since the database's launch. Once you start distributing it, contributors no longer have the ability to update or remove their content from it. If this was to be done, there would have to be a proper recognition that the circumstances had changed and a significant effort to make the new distribution method an opt-in rather than opt-out process.

Second, once you start distributing it you might as well just get rid of the current full member system of access to it. There will be nothing to prevent a purchaser from posting the information elsewhere for all to see. While it's true that someone can do this now, the dynamic nature of the database makes it a time-intensive process. Once it's decoupled from the server, it's far easier to post elsewhere as a complete package or in broad chunks.

Yeah, I'm with Av and Kowalski on this one, the LDB in hard copy form is a dangerous thing if it fell into the wrong hands. And also because again the creator and contributors loose control over the content. But one thing I also agree on was the wording of Kowalski's first post, he was correct in what he was saying, it was just how he said it.

Kowalski sums it up quite nicely in his second post.

Does anyone remember the controversy about the Cave Clan location crib sheets on UER a few months ago? I vaguely recall someone posting these super-secret sheets on UER, even though they had been given to him in confidence. He felt that "all information should be free", while the people who had given him the sheets felt differently.

The same sort of thing applies here.

As great as it would be, I would have to agree with the detractors here. There is just too much of chance of it falling into the wrong hands. Also, it would be outdated within hours of it being copied to disk.

The whole privacy issue is what comes up for me. Where it would be great to be able to have a CD/DVD of the LDB for times when one could not connect to the internet or where bandwidth sucks, once someone gets arrested with such info or their collection is seized by warrant or subpoena, then this site is that much more exposed and the more potential for other people to get into trouble.

So, great idea Panic!, but the risks far outweigh the benefits.

Okay, cool. I can understand hose reasons fine. No problem. I did consider that people's IP rights might be an issue but I thought there was no harm in asking. As mentioned in posts in other threads broadband is not avaliable where I live. I wish the people in charge of the telecomunications infrastructure would get with the times. I just want to plan as OS trip and want to see what is out there that's all.
