| | | I'm currently in the market for a new digital camera, and since I know nothing about 'em, I've been looking all over for some online resource where I can plug in the specifics I want, and it'll come up with some suitable matches. I found such a site, so just incase anyone else here might be interested, I'll post the link for yas. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

| | | The MOST important question is how much do you wnat to spend? I have taken a look at several models over the past few months and I have a good grasp of which ones are good vs dogs... DPreview is a usefull tool but sometimes they don't review the lower priced models. (just make sure you don't go to DPreveiw)... [last edit 10/2/2003 5:57 PM by Detroit - edited 1 times]

| | | Well I know I'm gonna end up spending between $300-400, and I gotta have Optical Zoom, USB support, a built-in flash. I would *LIKE* to have manual focus, but if it's gonna bump the cost way up, I don't really need it... All the dpreview site was giving me was the Sony DSC series (U10-U60), and I don't think they have zoom at all...

| | | Well... you are asking for a lot for the price. Take a look at the Canon A60.. Actually I just saw this on the Future shop website http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10033932&catid=10127&logon=&langid=EN &dept=14&WLBS=fsweb9 It is for an A40 which was the model before the A60... I don't know what the differences are but I can tell you that he A60 is nice. I have an A70 which is 3.2MP instead of 2.0 but is otherwise very similar. BTW the A60 is $349.00 [last edit 10/2/2003 6:21 PM by Detroit - edited 1 times]

| | | I compared the 4500 to the Canons and I liked the feel of te canon A series more... but it subjective. The Coolpix 4500 is nice as well. I just did a bit of reading and the A60 is nicer than the A40. the 60 is really just an A40 with all of the improvements that people wanted in it. I think it is worth the $100 difference in price.

| | | I'm a fan of the Canon S series. Manual features, good image quality, small enough to (barely) fit into a hip pocket if it has to, and decent battery life from its rechargeable Li-ion pack. Downside is 15s shutter speed maximum, no bulb setting and no shutter release cable jack, noise gets really bad above 200 ISO, and the vestigial eyepiece is not well-aligned with the actual lens framing.

| | | Nikon Coolpix 4300 user. It’s a very good camera. Small, light weight, easy to use and a complete manual mode. If you don’t want to spend time using the manual mode, it has a verity of “preset settings.” Nikon Coolpix cameras are also very solid. I have dropped mine and I have been in pouring rain with it three times and it never game me trouble. I just recommend getting 2 or 3 batteries.

| | | Decide if you want a compact camera, a medium size camera, or a medium-large camera. In general, for a given amount of money, the larger camera's will be of higher quality and have a better lens. But, on the other hand, its not a bad idea to start with a small pocket camera, knowing that as prices come down, and your finances improve, you can upgrade to something really nice, and still have your old pocket camera for those situations you don't want to carry much. For a pocket camera, look at canon's digital elph. Seems to run about $300-$400 for a 2MP or 3MP version. For medium size cameras, there are far too many out there. I've had good luck with my coolpix 995 (predecessor to the 4500) but theres plenty of other stuff worth looking at. For larger cameras, the dimage5 is a real bargain right now. 3MP, a digital slr with electronic viewfinder and a 7x zoom lens, running about $300-$400 on ebay. This would be my camera of choice for serious digital photography in your price range. Also in your price range is a panasonic dmc-fz1. Though its only 2MP, its lens is simply amazing, 12x zoom, constant f/2.8 max aperature. Not really perfect for UE, but maybe worth looking at. Anyway, don't forget to set asside extra money for a good size memory card. The ones that come with camera's these days are jokes. And don't worry to much about manual focus. Its a nice feature, but its fairly unusable through an LCD screen or electronic viewfinder. Caput_58

I got the Sony DSC-F707 on ebay for like $350 (w/o accessories)... has flash, digital zoom, 5 MP, and manual controls. I hav to say I'm so glad I have the manual features for low light shots, they look 100X better than a flash, and control over focus and f-stop is great.

I use a Canon G2, which allows me to go into a full manual mode (manual shutter, aperature, and focus), but they are more expensive (about $400US new on eBay). I read through and saw you listing features you want, but I think you may have things backwards. List how you want to use it, and that will help us determine what's best for you. Also, what have you been using for photography currently? What style of photography do you shoot? Snapshots, journalistic, action, still life? Remember, that without a manual focus there will be a lag of about a second between when you push the trigger and when the camera takes the picture, so most cheap digitals are useless for any form of action photography, and poor for snapshot photography.

| | | You should also consider Minolta Dimage 7i. It's price has come down since it's release. At that time the price was well over 1200$, but now I've seen it on sale for around 600$. It's a very good camera with a good options to take pictures in a low light conditions. I've been really happy with my Dimage. I don't know what more would I want from a camera. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/dimage7i.html

| | | Well, i just ordered a Nikon Cool Pix 5440(i think its 5440, i'll have to check). I can switch between using manual or auto mode, control focus, shutter, everything. Its like 4 or 5 mp, i can switch to different lenses, add on a flash, the screen i can move all over the place so i can view it from any angle i wish. It costs $700 us. I'll have a update on it when i get it. Ferret- I used to have the G2. When i ordered my Nikon, it was between that and the new G5. If i dislike the Nikon, i'll return it and get the new G5 [last edit 10/4/2003 4:44 AM by ProductOfDetroit - edited 2 times]

| | | I picked up a Sony DSC-U30, which is only a lowly 2mp but still takes nice pictures for something so small. It's about the shape of a brick but only a cm or two on the small side. Runs about $180 US if you find it at the right places. Sample pic:
Edit: I forgot, a good site to check out is Steve's Digicams. He has a ton of reviews and they all have unmodified sample images. [last edit 10/4/2003 4:51 AM by Servo - edited 1 times]
