I've heard double t diner was good. It would be best held on friday or sat. nights i think. Or maybe a nice coffee shop somewhere(everyone into coffee or tea?)or we could even meet somewhere in annapolis, like the mall or something, and just walk around, and have dinner and stuff. or waldorf. or D.C.

just some ideas

meet around waldorf sounds good.

That was fun, I guess no one else is up yet to post about it. I'm definitely down for the next meetup.

It doesn't look like anyone else has posted a summary, so here's how the night happened from my perspective, and others can chime in with more details or corrections.

I got to the Double-T Diner about 6:40, and was one of the last few people there. There are a lot of people, more than anyone expected, I think. Our count is 21, including one who doesn't come along exploring. Most people didn't know each other, but came in groups of 2 or 3 people they knew. We sit around in two tables, get to know who we're sitting with, play the name game to some degree of success. joe_bobbies mentions that we're going to Henryton (which for me is a shame because it's really the one place around here I've already been, though the two others I'm with haven't gone; but with this many people, seems like a reasonable ides) At around 8:00, we finish eating and start to head out.

I don't know his uer username, so I don't know if he'd want me to post his name--so I'll call him grey-shirt nike guy (GSNG for short). Anyway, GSNG (with much effort--this is 20 people) arranges us into 5 cars to journey over. We swap some cell phone numbers, almost lose some people on the way, but eventually make it there.

We all park in the state park parking lot just after the train tracks. Notice that it's around 8:45 by now. Hence, after dark. The astute reader will be aware that state parks are closed after dark. This plot point will become relevant at the thrilling conclusion to our story.

We walk down the railroad tracks to Henryton, including a no-lights walk through the tunnel. We first come up the the power plant and spend some time looking around there. We then proceed up the hill to the main campus. Although we start out as one group, it is clearly impossible to keep control over this many people, and as the night progresses, groups of people split off to explore different parts of the building.

Side note on organization of large groups: I do think that it's possible, but some things will make it easier. First, have smaller independent sub-groups. We eventually kept track of ourselves via the cars we came in; if we'd stayed in these groups the whole time, it would have been possible for one group to explore a different part, or leave, without worrying about the others being left behind. Groups no larger than 5. Having to wait for and bring together a group of 20 people requires a beforehand plan of what's going to happen, and the ability to split into smaller groups when needed. As it turns out, this wasn't what caused us trouble, but it's something I was thinking about as I realized I (and more importantly, the two people with me) were exploring abandoned property with 17 people, half of whom I'd just met, the other half I didn't even remember their names.

Anyway, some notes on Henryton:
I really do recommend that anyone comes here use an asbestos mask, because it's just everywhere. Most people didn't have masks at all, and a few had the white dust masks (which don't stop asbestos). Some of us did have (and use) asbestos masks. It's hard to say exactly what the effects will be, and the masks are expensive, but $30 is probably worth helping avoid problems.
There were a couple of neat things I hadn't seen last time, like the caretaker's house (considerably more modern than the rest, and extremely creepy at night--you really do feel like you're in a bad horror movie as you move towards the door at the top of the stairs) and the overgrown fire escape. I also still really like the chalkboard in the administration building (though once more, did not make it up to the higher floors). We saw the basement, stood on a rotting latter to see...crawl space and pipes. There was also a tagged board where someone had written they'd been here 1/13/06-last week. In general, the place really does have a very creepy feel at night (I'd last gone during the day), and i'm sure would have felt even creepier if there'd been fewer people around.
Some people did knock into a couple of things (I think there was a plate of glass that got shattered), and we were fairly loud, but I don't know of anyone who was intentionally destructive.
I am extremely jealous of Twixy's camera.

Now, at some point, a separate group (I'll call their group "group X" for identification purposes, because they weren't with us ;) showed up; some of our folks went to go get them. Because I'm slow, I hadn't realized this and thought this was the rest of our group (just more of the people I didn't know), and we were recongregating. Instead, our group figured out where group X was, and, sans flashlights, crept up on them in the dark. Eventually, one of group X shined a flashlight at them and said, "Yargh!", to which all of the 10 or so people who went along yelled, "Yargh!" back, and group X (6 people?) jerked back, very startled to suddenly have 10 people there with them. I hear they cowered a bit, and that the phrase, "That's not right, dawg." played a role. Someone who was actually un the group can give a better description of how this played out.

So, realizing that group X had parked up by the entrance gate, and could probably be easily seen, we decided (which is a difficult term to apply to twenty people) to get out of there. Regathering everyone and making sure everyone was there turned out to be pretty tricky, but GSNG is remarkably effective at getting a group of 20 strangers to get together and go in a common direction, and eventually we all started heading back down the railroad tracks. Two of our group, brothers, had come together, and were already on their way back. On the way back, two trains passed by, but we had plenty of room on the side of the tracks.

As we got closer, however, after passing through the tunnel, a car came driving down the tracks with headlights on. We scattered off the side, and waited for them to turn around and go back. There's obviously some worry in the group (there was talk of it being very seriously illegal to be walking on railroad tracks, but all I can find is normal trespassing laws-anyone know?). As we get closer, we realize that there's a car waiting for us with its lights on. We wait for a little while, and GSNG and Bry go up to check it out.

We try to keep somewhat in contact with cell phone. It is cold out. It turns out (from GSNG) that there is a cop car, and a larger police wagon. This seems bad (that they've brought this out here to take people in, and are simply waiting for us to come back). There is some back and forth (discussions of leaving incriminating items here, walking along the road, etc.) but in the end we all just walk up and turn ourselves in. The officers are actually very nice; it turns out they're park police; they'd arrived and given the parking tickets sometime between 9 and 10--those with the tickets probably have times on them. They lecture us on being in the park after dark and exploring Henryton, as well as espousing the virtues of laser tag over this kind of dangerous activity. When he hears that we all met "through the internet", he remarks, "Wow, I guess the internet really is causing the downfall of America." He also tells a little story about our two brothers who came back before us: "they thought they were so clever. they thought they were so smooth. They knew I was down here waiting for them, so when I drove down the tracks, they came right back to the cars while I was gone...unfortunately for them, [my partner] was here waiting with her lights turned off..." In the end, each car got a $35 parking ticket (the cost of which was split among the people inside), and we all got warnings for being in a state park after dark. Which, to be perfectly honest, I'm not worried about.

So, to make things clear: do NOT park in the state park parking after dark. They do patrol, they know what's going on, you will get caught. I parked in the "center for troubled youth" just up Henryton road when I came before, but I don't know it it's open after dark.

We all went back to the diner, and some of us stayed for a midnight snack (it being around 1 AM at this point) It turns out group X is also there, but did not get caught. Ironic, considering we were worried about their cars alerting the police to our presence.

I had a great time (warning and all), and was really glad to meet everyone. I'd do it again (just a little differently). Thanks, Bry and oh_the_horror, for putting this together.

Ya...it was amazingly awesome though, 20 people exploring Henryton. Props to da klieb for keeping us organized.

Group X were a bunch of 'straight up g's baby'...When we ran upon them they screamed in a corner..it was actually kinda funny. I believe the quote was "Internet is the downfall of society" to be exact..still...cool cops.

But back to group X..

We were standing in what I believe was the front of Henryton (between Henryton and the building with the chalkboard monster) and one of our group spotted flashlights. Fearing it to be police, we hid in the chalkboard monster building, watching them from afar. They were a loud, rowdy group, moving with no silence and probably louder than we were (Kind of depressing because they didn't get caught.) While we were watching them, someone came up with idea 'Hey, let's scare them.' Not sure who, but it was the guy in the bushes with me. We killed our lights, and moved furtively to the entrance of the building, and quickly up the stairs. For some reason, they had gone upstairs, walked through a hallway, and descended back down the next set of stairs. As we approached the landing one floor above them, Da Klieb (aka GSNG) flashed his light, eliciting a "shhh wtf was that" response from the group. We paused, waiting for their move, sadly, they just stood there extremely nervous. To break the silence, we popped around the corner going "AHHHHH", which prompted them to huddle in the corner going "AHHHHHHHH".

Shortly later was heard lines such as

"Thats not cool dawg.."
" You cool? - Ya, that was funny"
'HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH"- some of our group falling over laughing
"Don't touch my shit"

Best conversation down there being
"That was not cool dawg, not cool (in a fiesty tone)"
"Ha, there's 20 of us"
"Really? That was actually kind of funny."

I had a great time last night. It's awesome to meet people who are enthusiastic about exploring. I tried to organize a meet through meetup.com once and no one showed up except my nigga, joebobbies. I met some neat people last night.

Thanks for the write up, erehwon. And thanks, daklieb for organizing people.

I can't wait to do it again. Maybe a trip to Lorton in two or three weekends? It'd be nice to have monthly meets too, I think. Maybe the first Saturday of the month, since it's easy to remember.

The next one would be the first Saturday of February and we could go to Lorton. And from then on it could be a regular thing.

What do people think?

Great summary.Definitely was fun. It was great meeting so many new people. I would certainly be down for a repeat minus the whole involvement of police, at least they were cool. Hell the female officer made fun of my license pic. I doubt that anyone is too phased by our warnings anyways...So who is up for a few games of lazer tag followed by some exploring?

I would absolutely play some laser tag.

If anyone actually knows a place they like, speak up--but the internet has provided me with a couple of options:
http://www.xplasersport.com
http://www.shadowl...res.com/index.html

Each about $14 for a two-game/45 minutes session, reservations required.

Also, two weeks from now for lorton works for me...

Both the Lorton trip and laser-tag sounds like fun to me.

After getting the warning, I would feel more comfortable exploring in Virginia. These things don't travel across state-lines, right?

Haha...Lorton they can't wait for us at the cars too..

Laser Tag sounds pretty nice as well, there's a good place over in Bailey's Crossroads, which sadly is a hike from Lorton (driving hike), but its the best place I can think of.

I think the exact quote is "I knew the internet would be the downfall of the United States of America"

Especially funny because the cop also said he didn't use the internet.

Hilarity.

I say we should all get laser tag equipment and see if we can find the same guy. I bet he would laugh his butt off.

If we had all received a ticket for $55 the $14 for 45 minutes would translate to 58 hours of laser tag OR 156 games.

Still, my favorite quote was when he said www.nighttimeencounters.com (or whatever) and it was pointed out that might be for something else so the cop said getbusted.com. You know he so told all his co-workers about the 20 "kids" that came out of the woods, they were from "all over god's green earth" and met on the internet.
